A Solid Sequel to Qualify
By Amazon Customer
Heh. The current reviews are all 1 or 5. I don't think either quite on, but I'm 60 years out of the advertised age range. I like the central character, Gwen; bright, capable, some focused talents, and a combination of assertive and insecure. The first book, Qualify, was full of action. The second book is somewhat constrained by taking place in a year-long journey in a space ship, but we get some unexpected action. Also, the year is taken up in training the passengers for their future lives. The Atlanteans emphasize competence over safety, as we saw in Qualify. Some of the tests are - thrilling. The year includes several social events - rather a lot of time is spent on the personal preparation. That part may be more interesting for young ladies than it was for me. But. At one such event an appropriate amount of time was spent on Gwen's performance. If you aren't familiar with the piece, look up a performance and imagine.
So. I liked the book, and parts of it I liked very much. A few parts dragged. The ending was a possibility I thought unlikely, leading up. And it promises a rousing start to the third book, which I eagerly await and expect good things from.

A strong sequel to Qualify
By Cindy C.
Every once in awhile, a story comes along that stays with you long after you've read it for the first time. Even better is when you know the sequel is ready, and it is an equally satisfying read.
If you haven't already read the first book in the Atlantis Grail series, Qualify, you need to. Otherwise, some of Compete will not make sense. And it's a great story, too – the year is 2047, a meteorite of catastrophic proportions is heading toward Earth and our Atlantean cousins, who left the planet a long time ago, have returned to save as many young people as they can. In order to qualify for a place on one of the Atlantean ships, these teens have struggled through training and competition and have earned the right to make the one-year journey to a new solar system and a new life.
For Gwen Lark, that includes a couple of siblings, a boyfriend and the choice of whether or not she will be a cadet in the Atlantean fleet, or a civilian. Compete takes us through that year with her, where she has to confront not just her goals – she still insists she is going to compete in the Grail games when they reach Atlantis in order to save the rest of her family on Earth – but her continued fascination with and attraction to Aeson Kasseopei, hotshot astra daimon pilot, her new commanding officer and boss, and an Imperial Prince, to boot. Yes, she is still standing up to him, and still making him angry, but we see some growth and maturity in her character and a little softening in his as their relationship deepens.
I adore the new characters in this story (including a fop of an Imperial courtier and two office aides for Kass – one snarky and one sweet) and the return of some of the people I grew to know and love in Qualify. It's a good thing when peripheral characters from the first book become more real as the story unfolds, and are central to the continued plot.
Gwen's trials and triumphs aboard the ark ship as it races to her new home made me laugh and cry, and the ending had my jaw dropping to the floor. No real spoilers here, although I could talk all day about the amazing twists and turns in this story. There are Quantum Stream shuttle races, zero-gravity dances, more information about the problems facing Earth (and possibly Atlantis) and new clues as to why Gwen has such a talented voice.
And if you think this is just a novel for young people, think again. I'm the grandmother of one, not some teenaged fan girl, and to me, a good story is a good story. This one, like Qualify, will appeal to all ages. Gwen is easy to identify with on many levels. I'm not so old in spirit that I can't remember what it was like to be her age. Okay, maybe there is a bit of a fan girl in me when it comes to Aeson, And some of the other hot guys on the ship. Just don't tell anyone, all right?
Nazarian's writing, from Gwen's viewpoint, flows easily as we follow the ups and downs of being a teenager, having a gift, a goal and a tenacious personality that sets you apart, and trying to fit in with everyone else. Only to discover that what makes you special is all you really needed in the first place.

Compete
By Margaret Crain
I have thoroughly enjoyed this book! Although I first thought this series a Hunger Games knockoff, it CLEARLY is not! The detail with which the storyline is presented is wonderful! The characters are believable and real....everyone can't be a good guy! I have already recommended this to some friends of mine.
