MICHAEL JACOBS was born in Italy and studied Art History at the Courtauld Institute of Art. He was the author of Andes (Granta 2010) and The Robber of Memories (Granta 2012). He divided his time between London and a remote Spanish village. He died in January 2014.

Exploring Las Meninas

The title of the book is as idiosyncratic as Michael Jacobs’ text.

Since the age of seventeen, Jacobs has been fascinated by Spain in general, by art and by Velasquez’s painting Las Meninas in particular. In just a little over a hundred discursive and engaging pages he tells us about all this (not in chronological order!): his schooldays; the impact the painting has always made on him; his time as an art student; the several occasions, from his teenage years onwards, when he had travelled to the Prado to see that painting (pages which involve descriptions of his journeys and the encounters he had on the way); the character of Madrid; a bit on Spanish literature; the researches he had carried out on and off during his life, not only in libraries but also in meetings with specialists and with people who had been involved in taking the painting out of Spain during the Civil War and returning it afterwards; the various spaces in which the painting had been displayed; and the influence it has had on later painters like the French Impressionists and then of course Picasso.

Jacobs had started writing this book around 2012 but died in 2014 before he could finish it. He had discussed it with his close friend Ed Vuillamy, whose contributions to this book are just a few pages shorter than the 106 pages of Jacobs’ own text. Vuillamy must have worked very hard and in a very short time - truly a labour of love. He has provided an introduction of 29 pages of factual information about the life and times of Velasquez, about the painting itself and about some of the interpretations that have been made of this enigmatic work. He also added 61 pages of his own to Jacobs’ text, in which he describes their similarities and differences in interests and we learn a good deal more about Jacobs’ life and personality, of which Vuillamy gives an excellent account. There is, a long passage about Jacobs’ loyalty to his inspirational teacher Anthony Blunt, even after the latter’s activities as a Soviet agent during the war had been exposed. Jacobs’ text had made some references to the philosophical theories of Michel Foucault about figures looking directly out of us, so that we are drawn into the painting. Vuillamy expands on these in relation not only to Las Meninas but to several other paintings. Elsewhere, too he refers to works by other artists, none of which are illustrated. And there are references to some of Jacobs’ somewhat esoteric ideas which he expressed to Vuillamy in conversation but which Jacobs avoided in his own text. Both Jacobs and Vuillamy are learned and highbrow intellectuals, but, in my opinion, Vuillamy shows this off rather more than Jacobs ever did; and, frankly, I cannot always follow him. For example, he praises the multiple vanishing points in the painting, which it would take an expert - or at least a diagram - to understand, let alone to appreciate them as a mark of genius. But Vuillamy concludes with a touching discussion of what the Chamberlain, framed in the brightly-lit doorway at the back of the scene, came to mean for the dying Michael Jacobs.

I bought this book in hardback rather than on Kindle, thinking that it might have many detailed illustrations which never come out well on Kindle. In fact the hardback has only one small reproduction of the painting, so nothing would have been lost if I had downloaded it onto my Kindle.

A great book

This is an incredible book about an amazing painting. And when you learn the backstory on how the book came to be, it all comes together for a beautiful work.

I have seen Las Meninas up-close and in-person three times. It truly is one of my favorite paintings in Spain. It's so hard to describe how or why it captures me, but I'm clearly not alone. If you've seen the painting, you'll understand. If you haven't, you'll need to find a copy to look at, since curiously, this book only had one tiny photo of it.

While the book is about Las Meninas and what the painting might mean, it is so much more than this. In reading the initial reviews, I simply the thought the book would dissect the painting, trying to analyze what different components might mean. Instead, the role of the painting in Spanish history plays a prominent role, and we learn what the piece has for National pride. It's role in the broader world of art is also highlighted.

The book is an easy read and it flows well. Again, make sure you have seen a good copy of the painting---if not the original---as you might otherwise get a bit lost or confused with some of the discussion.

This is a really good book. I suspect I'll read it more than once.

Velazquez Las Meninas has been hailed by many as one of the greatest paintings ever, Foucault devoted the beginning of one his book entirely to develop a theory of its meaning. Nevertheless, i have never read a book that combined a deep academic knowledge of a work of art with such a personal account of the author life and its relation between art and life. A book every art lover should read.

Grade 9 Up—Kristina Snow was a 17-year-old with high grades and a loving family. In Crank (S & S, 2004), one summer in California with a meth-addicted boyfriend destroys her life. Addicted, she's raped, and goes back home to Reno pregnant. Glass picks up a year later. She lives with her mother and works at a 7–11. Depressed about her post-baby figure, she goes back on speed to lose weight. Her mother kicks her out and gains custody of the baby. She continues to spiral to the last page, which sets readers up for a third novel. Glass is even more terrifying than Crank in its utter hopelessness; meth's power is permanent and Kristina is an addict whether she uses or not. Though her recount of events in the first book is dry and self-indulgent, the pace snowballs as soon as she takes her first toke of rock meth, and one desperate, horrifying measure or decision follows another. Like Crank, this title is written in verse, but certainly not poetry. Hopkins's writing is smooth and incisive, but her fondness for seemingly random forms is distracting and adds little to the power of the narrative. Minor characters are flat, and Kristina's overblown self-pity elicits little empathy. The author tries but fails to present meth itself as a character; her descriptions of "the monster" are precious and overwritten. Kristina's story is terrible, and even when she's high, the narrative voice and mood are sobering. Teens, including reluctant readers, may appreciate the spare style and realism of Kristina's unhappy second chapter.—Johanna Lewis, New York Public Library

Stunning. Ellen Hopkins carries it again with another extraordinary story. Glass has such a variety of scenes where you simply need to connect with the primary character and help her understand she's heading in the wrong bearing. Miserable, unnerving, enlightening. It's fascinating to see a decent child turn sour genuine fast. I think this helped me be considerably more patient with the teenagers im encompassed with and attempt to offer assistance. Being a non medicate client, I regularly however individuals fundamentally had a terrible life and went the wrong way yet its enlightening to see a decent child with an apparently decent life turn sour genuine speedy. Dismal. Awesome book. Delighted in the read.

I have had this book in my wish list for a while and on a whim I decided to get it. It did not disappoint. It continued the story started in Ellen Hopkins' Crank. I really enjoy her style of writing, not only form but shape as well. Just about every page has words in some wacky arrangement, and in some pages you will find a "hidden" passage. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, although I would advise you to read Crank first and keep Urban Dictionary handy if you are unfamiliar with terms related to drugs, specifically meth (I lived a very sheltered life so I was looking up words from the book quite frequently.)
Conclusion: Loved the book, same style and characters from the first book, Crank, had to look up some words b/c I'm not familiar with slang words for drugs.

Glass.

Amazing. Ellen Hopkins brings it again with another great story. Glass has so many scenes where you just want to reach out to the main character and help her realize she's heading in the wrong direction. Sad, frightening, eye opening. It's interesting to see a good kid go bad real quick. I think this helped me be much more patient with the teens im surrounded with and try to help. Being a non drug user, I often though people basically had a bad life and went the wrong way but its eye opening to see a good kid with a seemingly good life go bad real quick. Sad. Great book. Enjoyed the read.

Attempting to De-Mystify Globalization

Global Shift is an ambitious look at the changing world geography through the lens of the economic geographer. The book is divided into four major sections that allow for a detailed exploration of the various arenas that Peter Dicken emphasizes. The text is wrought with details that make it occasionally dense to the non-economist or geographer but one of the most compelling elements of the text is the fact that in an ever-changing global civilization the text is applicable to many different academic disciplines. It provides an important background for understanding the process of globalization in its many manifestations. Ultimately the text comes back time and again to the idea that transnational corporations and political states inside a volatile world of ever-changing technology dominate the globalization processes. Although the text focuses on the idea that the economic world is global and transnational corporations are driving the globalization, Dicken states that the idea of a faceless/placeless corporation is really not an accurate description of what is occurring. I was reminded of Tip O'Neil's famous statement that all politics is local. In much the same way Dicken emphasizes that regardless of the multi-national face of corporations there is an important local element that makes the corporation more accessible than one might think. Another important element of the work is the idea that much of what is occurring is not new. There have been tends in multinationals for years and Dicken does a good job of historicizing these ideas before he discusses the current situation. Throughout the book Dicken emphasizes the three important factors of his argument. First, that there are new centers of production and power around the world. Secondly, that there is an emergence of new global finance dominated by transnational corporations. Finally, that technology, the center of industrialization is changing at a rapid pace that creates more and more flux in the global markets. The book is dense with facts, figures, charts and graphs, but its detail in numbers is immediately useful in looking at the other texts related to this subject. This text is less focused on the cultural ramifications of its observations but to understand fully the cultural context of the globalization process we must first understand the economic processes in play.

The Best Book on Globalization

In light of the other reviews of this book, I am inclined to agree that this is a heady, academic look at globalization. If globalization to you means Mitsubishi cutting down rain forests or Nike exploiting workers, this book may not be for you. It is, as has been pointed out, a textbook and it is one that will challenge your view of globalization. Having come to the book as an opponent of globalization, this book awakened me to the complexity of the problems raised by a rapidly globalizing economy. As a result, I was forced to re-examine my opposition and hone my arguments against globalization. This unbiased, empirical approach makes the book highly recommended for those interested in putting forth the best possible argmuments about the global economy. It is, however, highly academic and not necessarily for most activists.

Review of Athenaze, Volume 1

My opinion of Athenaze is almost entirely positive. By presenting in ancient language through simple passages connected by a single plot, the book gives a the student a reason to read, a reason to study. This is especially helpful in self-study, where there is no teacher encouraging or rewarding progress.

Furthermore, Athenaze offers many passages from classical Greek and biblical sources, introducing the reader to "real" Greek grammar.

Where Athenaze fails, it is small, insignificant matters: examples weren't given for all verb-types in this tense, this noun has an odd declension that isn't fully explained, etc.

By the end of Book 1, the student can expect a vocabulary of a few hundred words, and the ability to speak in present, future, aorist (past), and imperfect tenses.

Because Amazon will not let me review the Athenaze Workbook for Book 1, I will add my comments below...

For the self-study, the workbook proves amazingly encouraging. It demands additional activity on the student's part, providing supplementary practice and reading that might ordinarily be given by a formal teacher.

All of the stories in the workbook complement those in the actual textbook, though all of them feel miscellaneous, like lost episodes of a sitcom.

Overall, the workbook, like the textbook, is very well-designed.

Another helpful aspect of Athenaze study is the helpfulness of online resources. A simple search of 'Athenaze' produces several sites with supplementary practice activities, some free and others at a fee. I have only tried the free ones, and these alone are very helpful.

Excellent and clearly organized introduction to Attic Greek

I learned Greek at university using the JACT "Reading Greek" text. When it came time to teach my elementary school-age son, it was clear that the JACT text was inadequate--starting with its forbidding small type and its unclear (or absent) explanations of many key concepts. Fortunately Athenaze has come along since I went to college! It is superior in every way. The English text is readable and clear (at least as clear as one can be explaining the arcana of Greek syntax). I can even say that, thanks to Athenaze, I myself finally understand, more or less, the rules for accents that somehow eluded me in four years of Greek at the university level. The Greek texts are well written, not overly pedantic, and do a good job of introducing vocabulary and forms gradually and thoroughly. The accompanying workbook is indispensable for giving beginners more chance to practice, and (another improvement over JACT as I remember it) balance Greek-to-English and English-to-Greek exercises.

No language textbook is a substitute for a teacher, but Athenaze is an outstanding resource.

The best beginning Greek book I have found

I bought this book to help me learn Greek through self-study. I have worked through the first half so far. The focus of this book is to teach you to read classical (Attic) Greek. The book takes the inductive, learn-by-example approach to language learning. Grammar is also introduced along the way.

This second edition a significant improvement on the first edition. There are many more grammar exercises, and many explanations have been improved.

I have learned a lot of vocabulary and syntax from this book. The main reading passages follow a made-up story, set against the backdrop of Athens during one of it's most interesting times. This story, even though a little annoying at times, made the historical setting come alive for me. The authors effectively use the story as a way to introduce aspects of Greek culture and history. Where else can you experience, in beginning Greek, what it was like to attend the festival of Dionysus in Athens, for example? There are also wonderful secondary reading passages from the classical period, based on Greek myths, Homer, Heroditus, etc. It was great fun to read stories about Odysseus and Theseus in Greek (albeit dumbed-down).

Athenaze throws a lot of vocabulary at you, which is good, but I needed to re-read the lessons several times before I felt like everything was sinking in. While working through the readings, I often could not find a word in the vocabulary, probably because it was introduced somewhere in an earlier lesson. Sometimes I never found the word, even in the back of the book, and I had to consult other lexicons.

In my opinion, the best way to learn vocabulary and syntax is through readings such as the ones this book contains. It helps you remember vocabulary and understand syntax better, when you read it in context of a story. And working through a graded reader like this is much more interesting than grammar drills, which is the traditional way. However, it may be hard to learn all the grammar you will need from this book alone. If you do not take the time to master the grammar along with the readings, eventually you will hit a wall where it becomes very difficult to proceed. For extra practice, I recommend you also get the workbook (ISBN 0195149548, 2nd edition). There is a teacher's edition too (ISMB 0195168089), but Amazon does not appear to sell it. When you finish this Book I, there is also a Book II (ISBN 0195149572, 2nd edition) to continue your study.

New to this addition, there are also very short readings from classical and New Testament authors. I have skipped over these, because they just add more vocabulary, and I already feel like the main text is enough to absorb. I will go back and read these later.

I think this book would be good for classroom use, as long as the teacher doesn't skimp on grammar. Ideally, you would already have learned some basic grammar before Athenaze, and then you would use this book to review grammar and focus on learning vocabulary and syntax. This book could be used for an absolute beginning class, but the pace would have to be slow, I think.

For self-study, this book may be a somewhat steep climbing for beginners. But it is the best and most rewarding book I have found for learning Greek on my own. I highly recommend it. Just plan to re-read the chapters many times. Greek is a difficult language and there are no shortcuts. It will take hard work. However, Athenaze makes the experience about as painless and enjoyable as it could be.

[Update - Dec. 2, 2004] I have now worked through this book twice, up to the point where the aorist is introduced, about halfway through the book. Both times I found the "climbing" had become too steep and I stopped. There were suddenly so many more verb forms that I had to remember. Perhaps if I had taken a class it would have helped me continue on. I definitely recommend you spend extra time on the aorist when you get to it. And of course you must learn well the stuff that comes before it. I still recommend this book as the best I have found. I will try it again.
