Cognition, Brain and Consciousness provides students and readers with an overview of the study of the human brain and its cognitive development. It discusses brain molecules and their primary function, which is to help carry brain signals to and from the different parts of the human body. These molecules are also essential for understanding language, learning, perception, thinking, and other cognitive functions of our brain.
The book also presents the tools that can be used to view the human brain through brain imaging or recording. Brain recording is used to measure electric and magnetic signals in our brain. The most precise recording method is the single neuron or unit recording that uses deep needle electrodes implanted in the brain. In addition, the book discusses peoples consciousness and attention spans, which are considered complementary processes. Learning and memory capacity of the brain are also discussed.
The study of cognitive neuroscience is very challenging, as every aspect of the human brain must be studied to fully understand how the brain works.

Review
"This extremely exciting book provides the reader the necessary basic information to appreciate how the traditional separation between the mind and the brain is nowadays challenged by the nomological network generated by the careful observation of the biological–neurological events and the related cognitive inferred concepts. Indeed, even though the ancient debate mind versus body has never ceased to be a subject of discussion by scientists and philosophers, currently it has become again a productive and stimulating scientific question, mainly because of the availability of functional neuroimaging techniques that has attracted the convergent interest of biologists, neuroscientists, and psychologists…this second edition looks quite appealing and the editors should be very proud of it. The numerous elegant and very instructive colored figures and schemas as well as the quality of printing enrich the "charme" of this book, which certainly deserves to be suggested to anyone interested in a better insight on the neurological, emotional, and cognitive processes of our brain."--Childs Nerv Syst (2020) 26:1251
From the Back Cover
Written by two leading experts in the field, this fully updated textbooktakes a unique approach to introducing concepts of cognitive neurosciences. Many educational fields now require a basic understanding of cognitive neuroscience but other textbooks on the market are written for biology audiences, rather than for psychology and related majors. This text takes a thematic approach that is clear and understandable to those with or without a background in biology or neuroscience. New to this edition are Frontiers in Cognitive Neuroscience text boxes; each one focuses on a leading researcher and their topic of expertise. There is a new chapter on Genes and Molecules of Cognition, and all other chapters have been thoroughly revised, based on the most recent discoveries. New material has been added on the latest advances in brain imaging.
For teachers:
- A new Mini-Atlas of the Brain provides the instructor with a simplified way to introduce the topographical features of brain anatomy and the basic terms that are used in navigating around the brain
- Rapid adoption and course preparation: the instructor support website provides a wide array of teaching materials, so that once adopted instructors can quickly and easily be ready for class:
- PowerPoint lecture slides for each chapter, including hyperlinks to relevant websites and other supporting materials
- A test bank with multiple choice and short answer questions
- Flashcards on key concepts for each chapter for use in lectures or as student study guides
- Links to a wealth of related multimedia information and websites
For students:
- Beautiful brain figures and well-articulated legends: Illustrated in full color throughout, and including figures from contemporary journal publications presented with simplified legends so that students may grasp the complex results and theoretical interpretations quickly and easily
- An easy-to-read and complete introduction to mind-brain science: All chapters begin from easy-to-understand mind-brain functions, and build a coherent picture of their brain basis across chapters
- A full Glossary of technical terms and their definitions
- A student companion website with additional study guides, questions, and exercises

Excellent, accessible introduction
By rodrigo
This book serves as a highly readable introduction to cognitive neuroscience, an excellent place to start before jumping into more in-depth books. I've only read the 2nd edition and I don't notice any of the problems with the 1st edition that other reviewers mentioned so I assume they were fixed in the 2nd edition. All in all, highly recommended

Well written explanations of in-depth cognitive neuroscience.
By Nash4282
I purchased this book to augment my reading during my 3rd year med school psych rotation, on the advice of one of my attendings. I am very glad I got it! Wonderful background on cognitive neuro as well as great descriptions of topics that can be complex.

Quite possibly the worst textbook I've ever had to read.
By Clayton
I wanted to like this book. The brain is a fascinating and complex mechanism and while I know that we as humans do not understand the brain well, I was hoping this book would help bring me up to speed. I found myself resenting a class in which I was very interested.
When reading an 'introduction' book, we expect the writers to introduce new concepts before working with them. Considering this is a book about how the brain works, I'm not sure how this concept slipped past the writers, but it did. It seems the writers knew what they were writing about, but organized the book so poorly that anyone without previous knowledge about the brain could easily become discouraged with learning about it from this book.
-Spends multiple, non-consecutive sections explaining the same concepts without applying them. This book literally spent 3 pages explaining to the user 'how to science' without using the word science.
-Uses non-introduced terminology as if the reader was familiar with it. Why the F*** am I going to buy a book if I have to google everything I read? especially one that's OVER 100 dollars!? What a racket! Good thing you college students can't default on loans!
-Uses case studies to construct information without giving the basis of how the logic of such conclusions are constructed.
-Uses needlessly jargon-ish terminology to explain very simple concepts. This is even more difficult when compounded upon non-introduces topics.
Neuroscientists are an odd, eccentric bunch. Anyone who knows one knows this. But if a nuerosceintist plans to write a book, they should probably go through an English major first. There's no point in teaching a subject to others if the teacher is an incompetent communicator. Educational books require structure: Foundation, isolated concepts, facts before conjecture. This books lacks these.
