About the Author
Marilyn Sewell is a writer, activist, and spiritual leader. She was named Minister Emerita of the First Unitarian Church in Portland, Oregon, where she served as Senior Minister for 17 years before her retirement in 2009. Wanting Wholeness, Being Broken is the first of two books of sermons published during her years at the church, the second being Threatened with Resurrection. Her words of inspiration and hope are based on real experiences and rooted in a depth of spirituality that many, regardless of denomination or creed, find compatible with their own. Dr. Sewell received her PhD in Theology and the Arts from the Graduate Theological Union and the University of California at Berkeley in 1991. She holds a Master of Divinity, an MA in English literature, and a master’s degree in social work. The editor of four well-received anthologies, including the groundbreaking anthology of women's poetry, Cries of the Spirit, she is also the author of A Little Book of Forgiveness and A Little Book of Prayer. Her newest book is a memoir, Raw Faith: Following the Thread, which delves further into the inspiring life story revealed in the acclaimed documentary film, Raw Faith, available on Netflix. Marilyn serves on the adjunct faculty of the Attic Institute, a think tank for writers in Portland, and also is on the adjunct faculty of Maitripa, a Buddhist college in Portland. She writes regularly for the religion section of Huffington Post. The mother of two grown sons, Marilyn lives on the Willamette River with her husband and her cat Molly.

About the Author
Roald Dahl was born on September 13, 1916, in Llandaff, South Wales. In 1953, he published the best-selling story collection Someone Like You and married actress Patricia Neil. He published the popular book James and the Giant Peach in 1961. In 1964, he released another highly successfuly work, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which was later adapted for two films. Over his decades-long writing career, Dahl wrote 19 children's books. He died on November 23, 1990, in Oxford, England.

I love this book! I read it over and over!

I read this book so many times in third grade that I knew it by heart! I love the way that Mr. Dahl "alerts" you to the danger of witches. After I read the book for the first time, I began to watch people for signs of being a witch, including my teacher. THIS BOOK SHOULD BE IN EVERY LIBRARY! It doesn't scare little kids because it has a happy ending, though open ended. I think I even enjoyed being scared. I went on to read the rest of Mr. Dahl's books. I'd give this one two thumb up

This book rocks!

I first read this book in elementary school, in 2nd grade. Since then, I've always made sure to read it at least once a year. It's almost become a tradition! I LOVE Roald Dahl's books, and I incorporate him in my life. For my speech team, I performed a poem from "Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator" and won 2nd place! I think every child should read this book at least once in their lifetime.

I got this to help my girlfriend learn Spanish and it has been great. Great for learning grammar, lots of interesting words to extend the vocabulary (and it's a great story!)

About the Author
Ervin Jungreis is Professor Emeritus at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He received his PhD in analytical chemistry in 1955. As a postdoctoral fellow he worked with Fritz Feigl in analytical chemistry. He participated in microanalytical research conducted at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, and developed dry stable reagent tables analyzing hydrazine and nitrate in boiler water by Miles Laboratories in Elkhart, Indiana. Ervin Jungreis is a contributor in his field to the Encyclopedia of Analytical Sciences.

Most are similar, attempting to "translate" dense, bureaucratese-laden regulations and filled with reproduced forms necessary for federal contracting. About the Author
Barry L. McVay is vice president of Panoptic Enterprises, a publishing and consulting firm specializing in the federal contracting process. He is a Certified Professional Contracts Manager and a former Department of Defense contracting officer with 35 years experience in federal production, service, and research and development contracts.

Mr. McVay has lectured on many aspects of the federal contracting process to government organizations, businesses, and educational institutions. He maintains the Federal Government Contracts Center website, is the primary writer of the Federal Contracts Perspective newsletter, and has written many monographs, and magazine, newspaper, and professional journal articles on federal contracting issues.

Barry received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Virginia, and has attended the Air Force Institute of Technology, the Defense Acquisition University, and the Federal Acquisition Institute. He is a member of the National Contract Management Association, the National Defense Industrial Association, and the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International.

Fantastic and thourough resource for federal contracting

This book was a godsend for me in that it is so thorough and written for those who are not experts in the field of federal contracting which certainly makes it better than other books I have tried. It is incredibly thorough in covering all aspects of federal contracting in an easy to read manner. I would highly recommend it as an introduction to the field, a desk reference, or a textbook. It is certainly worth more than it's current price.

question about year of publishing for the 4th edition

I have a copy of the 3rd edition dated 1995. I suspect some of the Federal contracting information was outdated. I want to buy the latest edition. I saw this 4th edition on your web but cannot find the "year of publishing". Can you tell me?

Another awesome and STEAMY read!

** spoiler alert ** Pleasuring the Lady is the second book in the Pleasure Wars Series. We met Lady Portia in Taken by the Duke and Miles Weatherfield in An Introduction to Pleasure. Initially, I thought Portia and Liam would pair off but it was not to be. I was a little bit disappointed but after reading Pleasuring the Lady and reading how Miles and Portia fell in love, I changed my mind. I know now that Portia and Liam would not be a good match.

The story starts after Ava has married Christian with Liam not talking to his sister Ava. Ava, worried about her brother mentions this to her best friend Portia. Because Ava helped Portia before, Portia agrees to look for him. Having heard that Liam was last seen at the notorious Donville Masquerade, Portia decides to go.

At the masquerade, Marquis Miles Weatherfield spots a masked beauty and is instantly drawn to her. Portia tries to avoid him because she is afraid that he would recognize her since Miles was her brother’s mate years ago although they aren't friends anymore. She doesn't have any luck at finding Liam so she returns to the Masquerade. She ends up getting saved by Miles from a drunk gentleman at the party then they get caught by Portia’s brother in a very compromising situation. To save her reputation, Miles decides to marry her.

Before the wedding, we find out that Portia’s mother has a form of Alzheimer's dementia (although it is not mentioned in the book but it does seem like it) and that her brother is threatening to commit her to an asylum. Portia strikes up a bargain with Miles that she would do anything he wanted or demanded in bed just so her mother would not be committed. Unbeknownst to her, Miles had already thought of supporting Portia and her mother but he agrees to Portia’s bargain anyway.

Once they are married, both of them can’t keep their hands off each other and they start to fall in love. Miles, scarred by a previous experience is scared of history repeating itself and does not open to Portia as much. He also tries to set her up with someone else of his choosing to hide his insecurities. In the end, he is able to overcome his fears and open his heart to Portia.

I love Portia and Miles’ story. I thought Portia was the perfect woman to save Miles from his depravity. With Portia being so innocent, I felt it was the perfect fit for Miles. I also loved Portia’s transformation from being timid and shy to a strong woman worthy of Miles’ love.

I recommend this story to those who love erotic romance, redemption, and strong heroines.

This is book 2 in the Pleasure Wars series. We met the heroine, Portia, in Taken by the Duke and the hero, Miles, in An Introduction to Pleasure.

Lady Portia has spent her lifetime being a wallflower. During a conversation with her best friend, Ava, Portia sees an opportunity to make her friend happy and to try something daring. Ava's "missing" brother has been seen at the Donville Masquerade in the hells. Portia will do anything to put a smile back on her friend's face, even venture into the hells.

Marquis Miles Weatherfield is instantly draw to the mysterious masked lady and draws her into conversation. Portia has known Miles almost her whole life and barely talks to him in fear of being recognized. She quickly draws herself away and disappears into the night.

Several nights have passed and Miles is hoping to see his masked lady again. Portia is determined to find the brother of her best friend and ventures to the masquerade again where she gets help from Miles after some unwanted attention from another party goer

Miles and Portia can't seem to fight their attraction for each other and end up being found in a compromising position by Portia's brother. The only way to save their reputations is to marry.

Portia is terrified that her brother will put their mother in an asylum when she gets married so she makes a deal with Miles. She will do anything that he wants to in bed in exchange for keeping her mother safe. Will their marriage become more than just a marriage in name?

I really enjoyed this story and it was nice to see Ava and Christian from Taken by the Duke again. We see Portia blossom from a wallflower to someone with confidence that finally stands up for herself. We also see the growth of Miles. He realizes that the way he grows up does not define the type of man that he becomes. As with all Jess Michaels books, this book is NOT for the faint of heart! There is lots of explicit love scenes.

Good story of two broken people finding lust then love with each other. The love scenes were HOT! I love that Jess brought back Miles in this story, he is a great character. Portia is a great character too, I am glad she got a happy ending.

Gives Wonder to a Normally Dry Topic

This is one of the best microbiology textbooks I have run across. Krasner's talents as a writer makes it a joy to read. He enlivens
his subject matter with vivid decription and memorable examples. And unlike many introductions to the subject, which tend to overwhelm with exhuasting detail, this textbook restores a sense of wonder, proportion. and awe to the lowly microbe. Another plus is how key terms are boldfaced, indicating a link to the dictionary in back, thus saving fruitless searches for definitions of terms that may or may not be covered. Highly recommended.

While librarians should always be wary of titles bearing hyperboles, this is the ultimate visual dictionary produced by its publisher, which by extension makes it one of the best on the market. Many of Dorling Kindersley's pictorial reference works are cataloged for children's collections, but this tour de force deserves a place in all departments. With 14 sections, 270 major entries, and 30,000 terms, it is a vital addition to the field of visual dictionaries. Most important, every page glows in stunning color-a particularly useful feature in the sections on the human body and the universe. The illustrations are a combination of photographs and drawings. A 45-page, six-column index assures that any term in the book will quickly be found. Occasionally, as in the section on architecture, the feature illustrated is too small to be seen in detail or a pointer line is lost when crossing a dark area, but these problems are rare. There are also a few factual errors, which one hopes will be corrected in future editions. Of its competitors, The Facts on File Visual Dictionary (LJ 12/86) and What's What: A Visual Glossary of the Physical World (LJ 5/15/94) are both in black and white, and the Macmillan Visual Dictionary (available in a multilingual edition, LJ 3/1/93) consists mostly of drawings. This Ultimate Visual Dictionary is not the only pictorial dictionary to own, but it is by far the most visually impressive, and it comes at a good price. Enthusiastically recommended for all libraries.

The best Visual Dictionary out there

This is the most detailed visual dictionary that I've seen. If you're a well educated adult in the English language, perhaps a writer, and you're trying to choose between The Firefly Visual Dictionary, The MacMillan Visual Dictionary, The Scholastic Visual Dictionary, even the old What's What dictionary (which I think got the craze started), and DK's "Ultimate Visual Dictionary" - this book is absolutely your choice. As an alternative you can choose one of DK's "Eyewitness" Visual Dictionaries--these are sections from the Ultimate Visual Dictionary sold separately. Don't make the mistake of buying both unless there's a reason you want duplication. You CAN, however, get both this book and DK's "Ultimate Visual Dictionary of Science" which is a highly expanded version of the more generalized science sections of this book.

The Ultimate Reference

Old habits are hard to break. It's possible, though, that the "Ultimate Visual Dictionary" will cure you of yelling to anyone within hearing distance, "Do you remember what those little petals that sit on the top of a strawberry are called?" but I can tell you that when no one in the house comes running to your aid, you will be really glad to have this reference sitting right on your desk.
Libraries are nice. Heavens, the NET is even nice. But nothing can surpass a good, well-worn reference that you come to know intimately, know its strengths and its weaknesses.
The pictures in this book are colorful, clear and not so cute they're annoying; it is divided into sensible categories like "The Universe," "Prehistoric Earth," and "The Human Body." There is a concise index and an appendix of useful data like mathematical symbols and the ever-confounding metric conversions.
Now, sometimes you will need the name for something like the hole in the face of a guitar. You are praying there is a term that alliterates with the adjective you have already chosen to describe it. You rush to the wonderful book (after getting blank stares from anyone you ask about it first, of course), find the section for "music," and are disappointed to find that it is called a "sound hole." It's not a poetic term. It doesn't have any potential for a lyrical metaphor. Still, that's not the fault of the book, is it? At least you'll know that you are on your own for coming up with a term that is kinder to the ear or that, if you settle for "sound hole," there is nothing more accurate available.

This book takes everyday objects (and some historical objects as well), and makes them tremendously exciting by truly demonstrating how form follows function. The graphics are outstanding, and the attention to detail is unsurpassed by any text of its type of which I am familiar. The Ultimate Visual Dictionary 2000 is outstanding as a reference text for educators and students alike: I wish I had access to such a book when I was in school!

Classroom Lessons Transcribed

This book is actually Dr. Campbell Titchener's Feature Writing class lecture notes transcribed, and it is quite good. It's also useful for working newspaper folks to use as a reference book, to remind themselves, for instance, to include all the necessary components for a review of specific sorts of artistic endeavors.
Dr. Titchener read aloud much student work in the class I took, and he pulled no punches in evaluating the results. There was one unfortunate woman who could not capably put one word in front of another, yet she bubbled constantly about what a great writer she intended to be, all the books and plays and articles she was going to author. Dr. Titchener one day pronounced her work "trite" (he was absolutely correct), and it was extremely amusing to see the woman's cluelessly dismissive reaction, her declaration that he was "an idiot."
About three-fourths of the way into the semester, Dr. Titchener had an uncommon experience in his own life, and he wrote a short feature about it, which he read to the class. The response was brutal; students viciously ripped the piece up one page and down the other, and poor Dr. Titchener just sat there absorbing it all... sorta like body blows in a boxing match. He was the only college professor I ever encountered who had the guts to expose himself to an open-forum critique from his students, and you've really got to admire someone who has the fortitude to do that.

Good textbook for a Great Class

I took a class called "Reviewing the Arts" and this was our textbook, heavily supplemented by actual reviews from major newspapers. The book covers art, theater, music and the like. It's very readable and I only noticed one error in the name of the Martha Graham dance company, and apparently it's an error that has been there through several editions.

Overall, this would be a good read for a student or someone who is interested in writing reviews as a freelancer or for a hobby.
