The Boss is a Great Read

I loved this story! Yes, it is a short story! But Carlene Love Flores wrote a beautiful love story.

Nick is a rock start that has decided to turn in his guitar for military fatigues because he feels he's missing something... he needs something more. And he thinks joining the military is the answer, but not before he confesses his feelings to the woman that has held his attention for quite some time... he's best friend's little sister, Cherie.

Ever since her brother died fighting in Afghanistan, she has been one Nick's hairstylists for his tour. Young and na�ve, Cherie has had a crush on Nick forever, but she has always felt like a child around him. That is until now...

Carlene Love Flores packed this short story with everything. I thoroughly enjoyed both of these characters! :)

It was a sweet, but very fast story

This was a short story, so you are really only getting a vignette of this couple but it still left me wanting more (or sometime less talking and more action). It just ended really fast after the build up getting these two together and things seemed rushed to be declared. Unfortunately I never really got to connect to the characters. If you like short stories that have a bit of sex in them, then this is a great evening read.

It's a romance but it reminds us of those who have served and made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. It tugs at the heart strings and how it effects those left behind. I felt there was just enough romance and sex. And it's short because it's "romance on the go"!

I recommend this book if you want a curb your romance craving without having to read a full novel.

About the Author
David O. Jenkins is Director of Contextual Education, Director of International Initiatives and assistant professor in the practice of church and community ministries at Candler School of Theology, Emory University. He received his Ph.D. from Duke University and M.Div. from Yale University. P. Alice Rogers is Co-Director of Contextual Education Programs at Candler School of Theology, Emory University. She received her D.Min. from Emory University and M. Div. from Duke Divinity School. She is co-author of Contextualizing Theological Education, (The Pilgrim Press, 2008).

Authentic reflections by master Field Ed teachers

David Jenkins and Alice Rogers are long-term practitioners of contextual education. They were co-directors of the Candler School of Theology’s Contextual Education Program at Emory University, which has shaped theological study around context for a number of decades (since 1969). Candler wanted to evaluate their approach and learn from others, so Jenkins and Rogers analysed contextual and field education programs across America 2002-2005, and then invited teachers together for a conference in 2007 to explore best practice in field and contextual education.
A previous volume Contextualizing Theological Education focused on contextual education by 14 faculty from Candler (reviewed in JATE 10:2, 2013, 175-176). This later volume focuses instead on the experience of contextual education from Candler and twelve other schools including Harvard and Yale, with the input of 25 reflective teachers of the programs.
The first seven chapters explore “institutional values that shape best practice”. The contents include helpful analysis of models and case studies of mentoring, teaching social analysis, preparing for multicultural ministry, finding mission-shaped congregational placements, and reshaping curriculum around formation and contextual education.
The most historically fascinating chapter was Viki Matson’s narrating of Vanderbilt Divinity School’s controversial admission of James Lawson, an African-American nonviolence resistance teacher in the 1960s. He was arrested for a sit-in, the Chancellor suspended him, and the faculty courageously resigned in protest. The Chancellor reversed his position, and that stand helped shaped the school as a social-justice focused “School of the Prophets”. The School holds four commitments to oppose racism, sexism and homophobia and to positively engaging religious pluralism. Matson urges a pneumatology that encourages not contentment but risk-taking – beginning with teaching methods and field placements that put students in solidarity with those on the margins and facilitate communicating unpopular messages and speaking truth to powers.
The second section of six chapters focuses on “best practices of supervision and reflection” and especially how different partners in congregational field ministry work together. The different writers explore what they have learned about selecting and training mentors; organising and training lay committees to enhance congregational relationships; collaborating between supervisors, congregations and faculty; studying texts in theological reflection; and writing theological reflection papers.
One of the most insightful chapters was Barbara Blodgett’s discussion of assessment and evaluation. She warns that a supervisor’s affirmation of natural gifts such as compassion or intelligence can stunt formation, and that feedback should focus on performance rather than giftedness. She explains her use of observation reports to invite supervisors to offer more frank evaluations than generalized praise.
What I most valued about the book was that each chapter offered insightful reflections by master teachers. Not every practice is replicable for other contexts. But it is inspiring to read about creative approaches to taking students out of their comfort zone, helping them to study their congregational or urban context, and to develop their craft of ministry. These are invaluable approaches for theological education adaptable for any context. It is useful pedagogy for training pastors and chaplains, missionaries and social workers. Reading Equipping the Saints will prompt a whole host of ideas for anyone involved in teaching or partnering in Practical Theology and Contextual or Supervised Theological Field Education.

This is what it is like

I have never read a book by Kathy Lette before and to be honest, I will probably never read another one; hers is not the sort of fiction I usually read. The only reason I bought this novel is that I am a mother of an Asperger's child, and this book is by the mother of an Asperger's child. I am giving it five stars, not because of the story (which is profoundly silly in places), but because I have never read a better description of the everyday struggles of parenting a kid with ASD. Being heartily sick of tales about noble parents and tortured geniuses, I think she has done an extraordinary job of bringing this particular fictional topic down to earth.

Bless you Kathy, you have done ASD mums a service, and given us a laugh at ourselves in the process. That has to be worth five stars.

I have two children with Aspergers and the biggest problem that we have is other people's attitudes. My daughter is so blunt and truthful and most people cant handle the truth. I loved this book as it mirrored our life. I have purchased this book for my step mother-in-law in the hope that she may read it and understand my daughter better. Thank you Kathy as I dont feel so alone. Kathy also wrote an amazing book that was made into a movie "Puberty Blues" I purchased this for my Aspergers daughter. I got her to watch it to understand boys and the issues she was dealing with and to understand the social problems that teenagers face. I have not had any problems with her since with boys - thank you - thank you Kathy, your my hero.

Flippant and cursory treatment of an important issue

I am about 40 pages into this book. I have never written a review here before, yet this book drives me to. I am hating it. The constant snarky/pithy/flippant remarks that the main character makes are driving me nuts. I am having to skip chunks of text to escape this stylistic effort. I had hoped for an exploration of how one lives with a child with autism but it just grates on every last nerve as the author just cracks bad joke after bad joke through the book. I wanted to like it because I am interested in people and their relationships, but the constant sarcasm makes it unreadable.

About the Author
Dr John Lommler is a practicing geotechnical engineer with 44 years experience in teaching, consulting and mentoring in Structural and Geotechnical Engineering.� Dr Lommler is principal geotechnical engineer for AMEC in New Mexico and Texas.� He began his career in Ohio in 1967 as a student structural engineer working on power plant projects.� His career changed from structural to geotechnical engineering after studying under and mentoring received from Dr David Timmerman at the University of Akron.

Dr Lommler taught and practiced consulting geotechnical engineering in Ohio until 1991.� When he moved to New Mexico to help his wife’s health, the move introduced him to arid, unsaturated, collapsible soils with Bob Booth and George Beckwith, which reinvigorated his career.� In Albuquerque, he connected with Dr Ralph Peck, who inspired, mentored and encouraged him to continue geotechnical consulting practice past retirement age, mentor younger engineers, and write his book, Geotechnical Problem Solving. ��

Dr Lommler has written or co-authored over 1100 geotechnical reports and studies for commercial, municipal, state and federal government clients.� He is author and co-author of several reports on Uranium Mill Tailings disposal cell design available from federal publishing sources, and is co-author of several geotechnical papers published in conference proceedings available from ASCE and the Geo-Institute.

Well Needed Practical Discussion

Geotechnical Problem Solving by Dr. John Lommler offers a practical discussion on numerous issues encountered during the career of a design professional. The text is benefiting me by not being mired in theory (which is necessary, but available in numerous other sources), but addressing the practical questions and concerns that I have come across in my career. I greatly appreciate the candid narrative of Dr. Lommler's adept and refined approach to problem solving. As an example, I have been studying his approach to soil retention using solier pile and lagging design. He offers a simpler method than the traditional passive minus active net force diagram that intimidates many young engineers. He also offers many common mistakes that he has observed during his many years as a reviewer and educator. In short, this work is a welcome and unique addition to the geotechnical literature.

Excellent Resource for Entry Level Geotechnical Engineers

This book has been extremely helpful because Dr. Lommler speaks to you in simple, practical language. The discussions and analogies that Dr. Lommler uses to develop our understanding of geotechnicial problems have been invaluable to me. I completely agree with the statement in the book description that , "this book enables readers to consider how to confidently approach problems having thought through the various options available." The recommended references are also very valuable.

A refreshing change that really works.

The title is too simplistic for the insightful read that it is. It struck a lot of chords on what geotechnical engineering is all about, both from the technical and practice standpoints, as well as a few on life. Cheers Mr Lommler, great read.
