Not that good, alas!

Petr Kopl's adaptation of "A Scandal in Bohemia" was the freshest as well as the most iconoclastic interpretation of the immortal work penned by Sir ACD. Unfortunately, such words can't be written about this work. In many senses it remains true to the original, and there it falls short of the graphic novel version created by Ian Edginton. It also tries to incorporate cross-references to other classic works, but this time they appear somewhat superfluous. Nevertheless, HOUND is something that can be read in any form, anytime. Too bad that Kopl had set his standards so highly in his first work made available in English.

A fun read

The Hound of the Baskervilles is Petr Kopl's second Sherlock Holmes adaption.

Sherlock Holmes fans will already be familiar with the story of the Hound and quite a few adaptions but what makes Petr's work stand out are the little bits and pieces you see here and there. For example there is a scene from the Solitary cyclist when Sherlock talks about how he followed Milverton for the day his tobacco smoke looks like a skull. on the wall are pictures from A Study in Scarlet and The Dancing Men. You even get guest appearances from Mary Poppins appearing on the roof as well as Jonathan Harker {from Dracula} Dr Jekyll who the hotel reception says "if only every guest was like you" while looking his nose down at Holmes and Watson.

Petr's artwork is perfect for the gothic story. Wonderfully drawn illustrations which

There's also a letter from Sherlock Holmes at the end breaking down each chapter and all the little quirks inside them.

Other things I love are quotes like these.
watson: So to sup it up you'er going to the moor, where you will be in mortal danger to be certain that there is a mass murderer on the estate so you can have a good night's sleep?
Baskerville just glares at him.

A Different Hound of the Baskervilles

Over the years, I’ve collected literally thousands of volumes related to Sherlock Holmes. Mostly I try to find pastiches, providing additional adventures about Our Heroes, Holmes and Dr. Watson, to augment the pitifully few 60 original stories in The Canon. However, my collection isn’t all pastiches – there are a number of editions of The Canon, as well as countless books of commentary and analysis. As part of that collection, I’ve obtained a number of graphic novels and comics related to the Great Detective, some with original stories, and some adapting the originals. I was very happy to find these very handsome volumes of three of the Canonical tales, as written and drawn by Petr Kopl.

The first thing that should be mentioned is that Kopl did not limit himself to the actual Canon, in that he adds twists, subplots, and outright changes – some very big changes indeed! Although I’m not entirely happy with this – I’m a purist, after all – I understand what his purpose was. When I re-read these Canonical adventures next time, it won’t be from Mr. Kopl’s works, I can step outside of my purism and enjoy them for the little masterpieces that they are.

In Kopl’s adaptation of “The Hound of the Baskervilles”, his artwork is very evocative of the different moods of the story, from safe moments inside, rendered in plain browns, to jagged blues and greens and other dark shadows when on the Moor, facing the threat of the Hound. And at the end, he provides an unexpected Epilogue that might change everything.

Although I disagree with Kopl’s handling of the Canonical stories, I can’t help but admire all the effort and talent that went into producing these handsome volumes. I understand that he has also produced a similar version of Doyle’s “The Lost World”, which I’m sure will please fans of Professor Challenger. I know that I’m curious to see what he does next in the World of Holmes.

Desperately Needs Grammar & Spelling Check . . .

You know, I usually really like Cathy McAllister's, but this book is atrocious. The storyline could have been great like the others in the series, but the poor grammar absolutely ruins it (and I say that as a person who doesn't normally get too hot under the collar about poor grammar). I don't think this book resembles a third grader's writing ability, as another reviewer stated. I think it's more like the author wasn't even writing in their native tongue . . . Sentences are almost correct, but either the wrong tense of the word is used, or the author confuses homonyms. For example "bee" for "be".

Perhaps the most annoying thing to me though, is the way the author changes tenses in the middle of a paragraph and the fact that she switches from first person, 2nd person, and 3rd person within a paragraph too. It makes it really hard to enjoy the story. I don't really understand how a story could be written with such bad grammar. It's almost like the author used bad dictation software and then never bothered to go back and fix any of it. Unfortunately, I have to agree with the other reviewer that said Cathy McAllister should be ashamed of this story. Which is unfortunate, because I like the world and characters she has built (even if the heroine is annoying with her "No, I can't be attracted to you, I'm asexual!" tripe).

Cathy - I really, really hope you revise the content of this book and release an update. Your other work is too good to let this stand.

Half baked ideal, Not worth buying

I decided to get this book because I already had the rest of series, that had been on sale. They weren't that bad so...but this seems to have been written by someone who didn't make it past 3rd grade English class. Very poorly written . There is no way anyone proofread it. Farron calls Jenny his FIRELADY all thru the book because she is a red head till the end of the book when she turns into a blonde to match the cover. Repeats of scenes done differently, like the writer had thought of two possible ways they wanted it to go an forgot to choose just one. Just simple proofreading would have fixed ALOT of this books problems. The author should be ashamed of putting a half baked idea on paper for people to read, AND extremely ashamed for charging money for it. Then again in this day an age maybe just maybe if they had at least used their spell check program that even the most basic Puter's come with it would have helped? NOT.

About the Author
Wendy Ashmore is Professor of Anthropology at the University of California, Riverside. Her research centers on settlement patterns, household archaeology, gender, and ancient space and place in southeastern Mesoamerica. Publications include Settlement Archaeology at Quirigu�, Guatemala (University of Pennsylvania Museum, 2007), and edited volumes on Lowland Maya Settlement Patterns (New Mexico, 1981), Household and Community in the Mesoamerican Past (with R. R. Wilk, New Mexico, 1988), Archaeologies of Landscape: Contemporary Approaches (with A. B. Knapp, Blackwell, 1999), and Integrating the Diversity of 21st-Century Anthropology: The Life and Intellectual Legacies of Susan Kent (with M.-A. Dobres, S. M. Nelson, and A. Rosen, American Anthropological Association, 2006), together with numerous articles and book chapters on these and related topics.

Robert J. Sharer is Shoemaker Professor in Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania and Curator of the American Section at the University of Pennsylvania Museum. He has published over 100 scholarly articles, and several monographs reporting the results of his archaeological research, including a three-volume Chalchuapa report (1978), and a one-volume Verapaz report (1987). He is general editor of the Quirigua Reports, with four volumes published (1979, 1983, 1993, and 2007), and general editor of the forthcoming Early Classic Copan Acropolis Reports. He has co-edited five books, including Regional Perspectives on the Olmec (1989) and Understanding Early Classic Cop�n (2004), and is the author of Quirigua: A Classic Maya Center and Its Sculpture (1990), Everyday Life in Maya Civilization (1996), and three editions of The Ancient Maya, the most recent a completely revised work in collaboration with Loa P. Traxler.

Excellent

This was a VERY informative and informational introduction to archaeology. It is DEFINITELY for a college level, so be ready for some very involved reading and vernacular, but other than that, great! Everything you want to know about the technical aspects of the field are in here. Really good photographs and models to help further understanding.

This plot line is summarily predictable, but that doesn't make the ride any less enjoyable. Rio is well drawn with believable inner dialogue, and the stereotyped popular crowd is so much fun to hate. Realistic narrator, but hard to like her

New girl Rio expects to be a social outcast in her new school, so she is surprised when Kristi, the beautiful queen-bee mean girl, invites Rio into her clique. Rio quickly sheds the artsy friends she made her first day and embraces Kristi's offer. But being friends with Kristi comes with strings: Rio must make sure she's dressed to meet Kristi's approval, she is only allowed to date boys Kristi approves of, she must embrace Kristi's drug and alcohol habits, and above all else, Rio cannot outshine Kristi. Rio is happy enough to comply, but when Rio's popularity begins to eclipse Kristi's, Kristi sets out to destroy Rio's social standing.

Filled with mean girl cattiness and teenage insecurities, Art Geeks and Prom Queens is a realistic portrayal of how a teenager in Rio's position would probably think, act, and feel. As a result, I can see why it has been included in recommended reading lists for so many schools. Rio's voice is believable and never sounded forced or like an adult trying too hard to sound like a teenager. Instead, I can completely believe that Rio is a real girl candidly describing a year in her life. In this regard, Art Geeks and Prom Queens will probably be a hit among its target audience (of which, I should point out, I do not fall into).

While Rio might ring true, she isn't entirely likable. For most of the book she passively goes along with all of Kristi's demands, trading morality for popularity. As a teenager, Rio's actions are pretty realistic. I mean, let's face it, how many teenagers are moral crusaders in the face of popularity? Still, while it's completely believable that Rio would, for example, date a popular guy and let him kiss her (and more) when she doesn't even really like him all that much, it isn't very easy to like her when she behaves so falsely. The rest of the characters are generic stereotypes without much depth or likability. The plot is equally shallow and trite with no surprises.

Rio does stand up for herself in the end, but her turn around rings a little hollow. She acknowledges some of her behavior and the regrets she has about it, but other behaviors (like drug use) are never repented and there is no indication that Rio will stop. Teens may find Rio easy to relate to, but without adult guidance on discussions about the book, I wonder if the book might be sending the wrong messages about certain behaviors. There are plenty of other books and movies to choose from in the "mean girl" and "lifestyles of the rich and fabulous" genres, most of which I've found are more enjoyable reads.

"Heathers" for the new generation

This was an enjoyable read. It tells the story of Rio, who's named after a Duran Duran song. She lives with her former model mother and lawyer father in Laguna Beach, but misses New York and her friends there (they recently moved).

Rio makes a couple of friends from her art class in Laguna Beach, but then Kristi, cheerleader and queen bee, takes her under her wing. Suddenly, Rio has to follow rules...who to associate with, which boys to like, how to dress...or otherwise make Kristi mad. Everyone tiptoes around Kristi. But then, a fateful game of spin-the-bottle seals Rio's destiny. Kristi's not talking to her anymore, and she's turned the whole school against her.

This was an insightful look at high school cliques, the fear of those in power, and also just a fun bubbly read that made me remember being a teenager. The writing was pitch-perfect and really sounded like a young adult.

Juicy reading where mean girls and expensive clothes take center stage

Transplanted from New York, Rio (like the Duran Duran song, not the city in Brazil) feels out of place in ritzy Newport Beach, California. Her mother is obsessed with redecorating and Juicy Couture sweatsuits, and her dad travels too much for her liking. Even though Rio is fairly happy as a class-cutting art geek, she is soon invited into the most popular clique in school.

Kristi, the clique's feared leader who lives "on coke, both diet and Columbian," christens Rio her "best friend." Rio's climb to the top of the popularity food chain comes fast, and her fall comes even faster. After a disastrous party kills her popularity, Rio knows she'll have to rely on her own wits and bravery to set things right. Or at least sort of right.

If you're itching for the next Gossip Girl novel, ART GEEKS AND PROM QUEENS may be the book for you. Although the setting is sunny beaches and South Coast Plaza instead of Central Park and Fifth Avenue, mean girls and expensive clothes still take center stage. Despite the superficiality of a number of characters, Rio learns a lot about self-reliance and true friendship, making her a little more interesting than Blair and Serena. It's not great literature by any stretch of the imagination, but hey, don't we all need a book like that sometimes?

Could'nt have a more apt title

In this 10th installation of The November Man series, Bill Granger has come up with one of his best yarns. At a US/Soviet summit in Switzerland, a tape recording of the secret conversations winds up in the hands of an American freelance translator. After the tape is "accidentally" left in his luggage by a hotel clerk, the translator listens to the tape during a long train ride and learns of its secrets. As all sides converge on the man and his lover, the chase for control of the tape intensifies.

Enter Deveroux/November. He is sent by R Section to find the tape and encounters nemesis Henry McGee, who has managed to escape from Federal Prison in a very well written passage. As in all November Man novels, the line between good and is blurred to an ambiguous grey. There are really no good guys in Granger's world of intrigue, only differing agendas. In the all-out hunt for the tape unholy alliances emerge out of necessity as Deveroux must sort of cooperate with McGee. In the end all that matters to the powers that be is the covering of their own asses. This novel covers so much in its 264 pages that it's hard to explain it all. To sum it up I have to say it was one of the most interesting looks into the mind of the iconoclast that is agent Deveroux a.k.a The November Man.

As leader of the Boeing company's design and engineering team that created the 747—the world's first wide-body, twin-aisle airplane—Sutter had perhaps the best overall view of all aspects of the 747's development in the mid 1960s. This engaging look at the technical, political and corporate forces that clashed over the 747 adds important details to Clive Irving's 1993 Wide-Body: The Triumph of the 747. Sutter's descriptions of the furious pace his team had to maintain proves his assertion that the 747's development process closely resembled that of aviation's colorful early days. The chief engineer of the 747 here recounts his experience designing one of the most iconic airplanes in aviation history. At pains to dispel the perception that the humpbacked behemoth was a one-man show, Sutter mentions many colleagues as he relates a process that partook as much of intra- and intercorporate diplomacy as of nuts-and-bolts engineering. Indeed the narrative dynamic arises from the interaction of technical problems with the nonengineering concerns of the Boeing hierarchy. The company was in deep financial trouble at the time of development (1965-70), as its supersonic transport project hemorrhaged money. Pressure on Sutter was intense both to expedite the 747 and slash costs; in the book's climax, Sutter faces down the executives' demand that he fire thousands of his engineers. Sutter's story also revels in the intuition and technical precision that resulted in the 747's distinctive appearance and capabilities. Fair book but detailed. Solid PM concepts and excellent backstory. Would recommend for practicing PMs with a few years of experience before reading.

Joe Sutter IS " one of the great ones "

The above partial quote is plagerized from Joes book as he quotes Charles Linderbergh comments about the 747 which in its entirety was " This is one of the great ones "

I'm a retired Boeing Engineer, and while never meeting or dealing with Joe since I was working in other areas [supersonic transport, etc ] I did hear and work in later years with several who did have personal knowledge. Joe pretty much tells it like it WAS/IS.

I especially appreciated his efforts to avoid highly technical terms, and in few simple words explaining some of the basics of flight, powerplants, design criteria, safety concerns, etc. In some ways, it could be considered ' high school' level courses on flight and design criteria- but without ' talking' down to the reader.

It is an 'easy read' and does lift the curtain on a few, but not all the insider political games typical of Boeing and most other aerospace companies. [ I've also worked at Rockwell and Ling Temco Vought ]

Joe is definitely from the 'old school' as far as ethics and integrity, and his comments about serving on the Challenger Shuttle disaster commission and the NASA attitude re safety and risk in the last chapter seem as if they were written this week [ June 16,2006- see news items about safety concerns re the impending Shuttle flight in July 2006 ]. Hopefully, his comments and concerns will NOT be proven to be " deja vue all over AGAIN."

In my opinion - a keeper, and readable from Junior high up.

Building The Greatest Commercial Airliner Yet

747 is simply a must for anyone in the aerospace design industry, or for people who are just interested in how the 747 was built. Joe Sutter, the airplane's director of engineering and the one most responsible for its actual design, has written a trim, quick, and enjoyable to read history of the 747 program encased in a semi-autobiography.

After a few chapters exploring the author's early life, including his college time and Navy life, the book spends its bulk on a 50,000 foot overview of what was going on with the 747 development program from its inception until its most recent incarnation to fly in the form of the 747-400 family of derivatives. The final chapters sweep the remainder of the author's professional career including his service on the Challenger Disaster commission. Joe (and after reading the book you definitely get the feeling he would prefer to be called that then Mr. Sutter) has certainly led a very interesting life, and has had the privilege of experiencing a truly gilded age of aviation from the peaks of its ambitions and the lows of its difficulties and uncertainty. But the star of the book is truly the magnificent 747 aircraft and even his more autobiographical chapters tie into the aircraft and its design.

Much of the author's life exerted an inexorable influence on the design philosophy he brought to the plane. As an early child he grew up in Seattle and watched, literally from his neighborhood, as Boeing would roll out new aircraft through the twenties and thirties and try to push aviaiton forward and make the world a smaller place. Caught up in the majesty of flight Joe wanted very badly to design airplanes, but as WWII dawned when he was in college that would have to wait for more important world events to be sorted out. Joining the Navy he became a deck officer on a destroyer escort in the Atlantic, where he had a formative experience. Returning to Boston Harbor his ship started to become glazed with rapidly growing layers of thick ice in the midst of a storm, making the ship dangerously top heavy. With no anti-icing system and no ability to get people out on deck to hack off the ice the crew had to just ride out the storm praying they wouldn't die. From this moment on the author decided safety would be a primary criteria of anything he designed.

The legacy of the 747 is one of carrying on Boeing's legacy of leading the pack in aviation with an unparalleled record of safety, thanks to smart design and brute force quadruple redundancy. (Brute force is by no means meant perjoratively here!) The 747 came about during an amazing time in aviation history. It was the first wide body airliner (against the initial full double decker narrow body wishes of its launch customer), the first turbofan (or fanjet as they are sometimes called) powered airliner, and it was designed by a slimmed down workforce in the shadow of the ill fated 2707 SST, while the 727 and 737 were also absorbing significant company resources, and while Lockheed's L-1011 and Douglas' DC-10 provided competition. The story of how this giant came about and triumphed in spite of the decidely low expectations Boeing clearly had for it at the begining is a truly fascinating one, filled with such aviation luminaries as Juan Trippe, Bill Allen and Charles Lindbergh. Joe's life on the program is also filled with equally amazing events including state department sponsored dinners with the Soviets in Paris at the height of the Cold War (in the spirit of "Detente"), and trips all over the world ranging from the expected places like Japan and New York, to Baghdad.

In addition to being a great story well told, there are real gems here for aviation program managers and aircraft designers about how to make a successful airplane. Absolutely worth reading, and would be something I would like to see as a textbook for aeronautical engineers, perhaps in an aerospace history course, to give them some real world perspective that is so often lacking in modern engineering degrees.

An outstanding book, highly recommended!

About the Author

Darcia Narvaez is Professor of Psychology at the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Narvaez's research focuses on moral development through the lifespan. Her theories include how early life affects the neurobiology underpinning of moral functioning (triune ethics theory), how evolved parenting practices may foster optimal moral functioning and wellbeing, and how teachers can take steps to foster ethical capacities during regular instruction (integrative ethical education).

Kristin Valentino is Assistant Professor of Psychology and the William J. Shaw Center for Children and Families Collegiate Chair at the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Valentino's research interests are in developmental psychopathology where she studies how the integration of biological, psychological, and environmental factors can inform our understanding of typical and atypical development.

Agustin Fuentes is Professor of Anthropology at the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Fuentes' current foci include cooperation and bonding in human evolution, ethnoprimatology and multispecies anthropology, evolutionary theory, and public perceptions of, and interdisciplinary approaches to, human nature(s).

James McKenna is Rev. Edmund P. Joyce, C.S.C., Professor of Anthropology at the University of Notre Dame. Dr. McKenna pioneered the first behavioral and electro-physiological studies documenting differences between mothers and infants sleeping together and apart and has become known worldwide for his work in promoting studies of breast feeding and mother-infant cosleeping.

Peter Gray is Research Professor of Psychology at Boston College. Dr. Gray has conducted and published research in neuroendocrinology, animal behavior, developmental psychology, anthropology, and education. His recent research has focused on the role of play in human evolution and how children educate themselves through play.
