About the Author
Dan Kalman has been writing about and teaching mathematics for 30 years. A graduate of Harvey Mudd College (BS, 1974) and the University of Wisconsin (PhD, 1980), he is a Professor of Mathematics at American University, Washington, DC. Kalman's mathematical writing has been recognized with multiple MAA awards: Allendoerfer Awards in 1998 and 2002, Polya Awards in 1994 and 2002, and an Evans Award in 1997. He is the author of one previous book, Elementary Mathematical Models, published by the MAA in 1997.

Garden of delights

This substantial tome by Robert Parker is a beautifully written and wonderfully detailed overview of what little is known about Athenian religion of the 5th and 4th centuries. The general reader who ignores the copious footnotes will miss some flashes of wit.

For the Athenians, religion was, as Parker rightly says, utterly pervasive, so woven into their life that they could not easily see it as a thing separable and optional. Yet their attitude towards it seems to have been at times almost ironical. If it was more to them than a poetic representation of their social arrangements and of the central concerns of their life, and more than just an excuse for taking time off from work for a cook-out, a show or a drinking party, it was less than a confidently held system of beliefs in which unseen powers were regarded as being susceptible to influence through begging or through the offer of food and drink.

Athenians embroiled in litigation might send messages to the underworld via the recently dead (those weird Fed Ex deliverymen), asking that their courtroom opponents be cursed, yet court cases were not referred to oracles for decision. Oracle-mongers were allowed to speak in the assembly, yet public policy was settled by the people, not the gods, and was settled on the basis of mundane considerations. Though Athenians were skeptical about the existence of an afterlife, and though the same lines of thought which warranted such skepticism would also have warranted skepticism about the existence of the gods, only a handful of intellectuals appears to have taken the obvious second step.

As Parker shows in detail, this most logical of peoples produced a polytheism that is "indescribable." Their gods and heroes are legion; they lack sharply-defined identities and clearly-defined functions; they are called by many names and at times seem to merge into one another.

The evidence Parker so ably marshals invites one to guess at the thinking, if it can be called thinking, which may lie behind some Athenian religious beliefs and practices. For example, the Athenians asked their departed ones to "send up good things." Perhaps the idea was this: the earth sends up good things (plants); the dead are put into the earth; therefore, the dead can send up good things (wealth). As an argument this is comical, but it has charm. (The idea that you can make a dress for a god--What an irresistible notion!--has the same kind of charm.)

Parker appears to regard Athenian religion with something bordering on affection. It is perhaps worth mentioning that this religion on occasion drove the Athenians into fits of mass hysteria and that it also caused--or furnished a pretext for--the murder of quite a number of people, including a harmless fellow called Socrates.

This book can be dipped into with pleasure again and again. Highly recommended.

A wonderful plan for daily Bible reading

The One Year Bible, New Living Translation, makes daily Bible reading a pleasure because it is an orderly plan that gives the reader a passage from the Old Testament, New Testament, Psalms, & Proverbs to read each day from an easy to understand, but still meaningful, translation (NLT). What is amazing to me is how one day's readings will relate to and enhance the understanding of the passages from the other parts of the Bible for the same day. It took me 15 years to read through the Bible the 1st time, 5 years the 2nd time, and I am now on my 3rd reading. It never gets old, but more precious.

This is wonderful! I have tried many times to read the bible but I always got frustrated because it was hard to read and understand. The way this one is set up is great and it feels a little less overwhelming as far as the thickness goes due to it being seperated into days.

This bible is perfect for my requirements.

I love the New Living Translation second edition for reading the scripture. I much prefer it to NIV, TNIV, or the Message. For study, I would refer to several versions, probably the NLTse, NRSV, NIV and NAB.

I love the One Year format. I have tried many times to read the whole bible but always failed. This bible is organised so that each day's reading is marked by the date. Each day's reading is in easy bite size chunks of the Old Testament, New Testament, Psalms and Proverbs. Therefore, even if I miss a day or two I can jump right back into it by going to the reading for that day.

I love the "New Believer's" commentary. I am not a "new believer" but I could sure use a refresher. Each reading from the Old and New Testament has a brief introduction. Then each day's reading has a short commentary focusing on an important point a Christian should know.

I love the hard cover because it allows me to read in bed. I previously used the Catholic version of the NLT One Year Bible in paperback. The cover was so flimsy that it was hard to hold the book open while reading in bed. However, the paperback version would have been fine if I were reading elsewhere.

The font is large and clear so I am able to read without strain. Overall quality of the book and paper is good.

Cleansed: Overcoming Pornography Issues with Jesus

Pornography is a huge addiction in our society: ripping way the innocence of children, stripping teens of a realistic expectation of sex, driving boyfriends and girlfriends into sex prematurely, deadening marriages, afflicting all ages, and destroying families. Marcel LeJeune has dealt with this scourge in his ministry and has written one of the most complete guides on breaking free from a Catholic perspective. I recently read through Cleansed: A Catholic Guide to Freedom from Porn and was impressed.

LeJeune has some clear opening chapters describing pornography and the situation before he jumps into ways to overcome it. He begins with a definition: “Pornography is material that portrays suggestive behavior in order to arouse sexual desires and reactions.” (8) Marcel cleary opposes the Christian and pornographer’s view of sex: “No amount of fear tactics or negativity can sway someone away from porn once that person has been using it for a while. Rather than peddling what is bad, we need to focus on the beautiful and positive message of Christ has given us about sex. Sex can be a beautiful and amazing act if we choose to use it in the manner God intended.” (14)

He admits, as I would agree, that the Church has been slow to respond to this and unfortunately the church’s reasons seem out of date to most people today. The only thing I think was unnecessary in these introductory chapters was explaining the history of Christianity’s view of contraception: it is important to link contraception with pornography in the sense that both promise “consequence-free” sex which takes sex outside of a committed relationship, normally marriage, but talking about the Lambeth Convention and Humanae Vitae seemed more of an interesting sidenote than focal for his topic. He does point out how the marital act should be about the other person – “I love you. I want to spend the rest my life with you and have children with you” – not about oneself – “I want to have sex with you.” (37)

The center of this book is Chapter 4 where he gives 18 strategies to stop and overcome pornography. Five are worth repeating here:1. Get rid of porn and easy ways to access it.
2. Find an accountability partner.
3. Practice fasting.
4. Learn to overcome temptation.
5. Redeem thoughts of temptation rather than trying to suppress them. Offer them to Jesus.

Two others that he has implicitly but I think are also important and which I’ve blogged (when I emailed these to Marcel, he liked them):
1. Don’t Say “No,” Say “Yes” to Something Else.
2. Understand the virtue of chastity and consciously view others as persons not objects.

Then he rounds out the book talking about other aspects of pornography and Catholic morals. Most of it is pretty straightforward virtue ethics, prayer and sacramental life with an emphasis of recovering it after recovering from pornography. I particularly liked how he shows our desires for pornography are really hidden desires for Jesus: “Porn will never satisfy. It always leaves is demanding more. It will never bring us to happiness and peace were looking for. Jesus always satisfies and only asked us to give him our hearts.” (70)

Despite a few flaws like three pages dedicated to the history of the morality of birth control and not being explicit about two strategies I think are important in fighting pornography, this is still by far the best full-length book on the topic I’ve seen.

If you're looking for a handbook about how to get rid of porn for good, this is it. Marcel LeJeune offers a straightforward, heartfelt guide with tips for how to break the habit. He also gives a rich background about how society became so saturated with pornography in the first place. The theological underpinnings are just right: not too deep for those who are just learning that Christ is the redeemer of their sexuality (not just their souls), but not so shallow that those who are better grounded spiritually can't still find inspiration. This is not the sort of book that requires deep reflection and preparation before you can put it to use. You can take Marcel's advice today. If you have children, you can start guarding your family and home against pornography right now. If you love someone who is addicted to pornography, you can offer this as a resource. Get this book. Read it, and live it. You won't regret it.

Nearly everyone will learn something from this book

I've been repairing and building things my whole life and thought a had a pretty decent grasp of the most common tools and how to use. I bought this book because I thought it would be a fun bathroom bath.

I've been pleasantly surprised by the amount of things I've learned. I've learned a better way to use some of the tools I own and understand the capability of tools I've never touched. Topics include rules, squares, plumb bobs and levels, dividers and calipers, scribers, punches, jigs and guides, benches and vises, clamps, sharpening tools, saws, chisels and gouges, planes, routers, spokeshaves, scrapers, knives, staple gun, hammmers and mallets, modeling tools, pincers and pliers, auger and gimlet, braces and drills, lathe, screwdrivers, sanders and abrasives, lubricating equipment, battery testing equipment, rasps and files, snips and shears, wrenches, taps and dies, plumbing tools, welding tools, needles, brushes rollers and paint sprayer, ladders, building tools, axes and hatchets, adze hooks and scythe, digging tools, protective clothing.

This isn't an in depth reference work. However, it is an enjoyable and enlightening book that many folks who take pride in repairing and building will enjoy.

Lovely!

My Dad gave me this book when I was growing up. I am now a Carpenter and still have the copy he gave me. I think it is wonderful book and I often refer to it if I need an answer about a tool in my kit. It is such a lovely book to just browse through because the illustrations are great and the text very informative. I have a biast opinion yes! but I would not do without it in my reference library.

Tools and How to Use Them

This publication is a great source of information to me as a shop teacher trying to arouse young students' interest in tools. In one book, the author relays the history of most of the common hand tools in use in carpentry and associated trades today. In addition, he gives detailed instructions as to the use of each tool and provides flawless illustrations to guide the reader.
I would recommend this book as a gift for a hobbyist, shop teacher, contractor or any persons with similar interest areas. I plan to award a volume to my top shop student each year.\

About the Author
Dr. James T. Shipman was a long-time physics educator at Ohio University, his alma mater, and was Professor Emeritus until his passing in 2009.

Jerry Wilson received his physics degrees from Ohio University (B.S., Ph.D.) and Union College in Schenectady, New York (M.S.). In addition to co-writing PHYSICS LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS, he is one of the original authors of the first edition of AN INTRODUCTION OF PHYSICAL SCIENCE (published in 1971) and has several other physics textbooks to his credit. Wilson is currently Emeritus Professor of Physics at Lander University in Greenwood, South Carolina.

Chuck Higgins received his B.S. degree in physics from the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 1988 and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees form the University of Florida in 1996. Areas of interest and research include planetary radio astronomy and astronomy education and public outreach. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Middle Tennessee State University in Mufreesboro, Tennessee. He is the 2007-8 recipient of the MTSU Outstanding Teacher Award, and is also the recipient of the NASA Excellence in Outreach Award for his work on NASA's Radio Jove Project in 2005.

Links to a physical book but recieved a slip of paper with a link to a digital copy.

Title says it all, ordered a book, or at least the item linked to a book and got a slip of paper instead with a digital download link to google drive. This is super illegal just so you know, a federal judge ruled it is illegal to sell used digital copies of books. E-books are considered an original version of the author’s work. If you’ve already bought a version and then sell it to someone else, you’re making an illegal copy of the original work

This book is not in great shape. The covers feel dirty and are extremely scratched up al over. I am very disappointed in my purchase for the amount that I spent. There are also stickers all over the outside saying used, but they are halfway scratched off. Even if I sold this book back right now, I wouldn't make anything on it du to the condition.
