About the Author
USA Today and NY Times bestselling author Candice Gilmer leads a dangerous double life as a mommy and a writer. In between boo-boo healing and fixing broken toys, she writes stories usually to the tune of children's television shows.

Growing up in the Midwest, Candice stays close to her family, especially the ones with basements when the tornadoes come around. She also works as a hairdresser, which she's done for over fifteen years, and brings her laptop to work so she can write between clients.

When she's not writing, styling hair and taking care of her family, she gets together with her girlfriends for gossip and coffee. All in all, she stays very busy, but really, she wouldn't have it any other way.

Well, maybe a little less children's television.

Good read, short though.
By Tanielle
Chris and Harper meeting I thought this was going to be a story that was love at first sight and happily ever after from the jump. To my surprise it was more of a stepping stone into something more with bumps along the way. Really enjoyed the Aunt and her banter, could've used more of that. The follow up with these two could be really good if more drama was added in.

So much fun!

I love this author so much! She writes the absolute best books. It was nice to have a shorter book this time that I could read quickly -- though I love her longer books, too. Her characters are wonderful and their journey to love is really special. A definite must read.

Chewing the Fat: An Oral History of Italian Foodways from Fascism to Dolce Vita, by Karima Moyer-Nocchi

Italy is experiencing a surge of gastronomic nostalgia, a yearning to recreate and relive the delectable rustic meals of yesteryear, of brimming chalices of wine and sauce-laden pasta. A return to the simple abundance of Italy’s past!

Ah, if only it were true. If there was a glorious yesteryear of Italian feasting, it was enjoyed only by society’s elite. As for standard, rustic fare, such meals bore little resemblance to what is now considered—even in Italy—traditional Italian food.

Determined to uncover the true roots of Italian cuisine and reveal its intriguing yet uncelebrated past, food historian Karima Moyer-Nocchi interviewed Italian "ninetysomething" women from various walks of life, from charcoal-makers to countesses. Her travels spanned from the far north to the deep south, as well as Italy's former landholdings. All of the interviewees had lived through the harrowing years called the Ventennio fascista, the twenty-year reign of fascism in Italy, and were eager to have their final say.

What follows are eighteen remarkable oral narratives, each building upon the last to create a mosaic of Italian foodways, from the fascist era through to the post World War II boom, the “Dolce Vita.” Each woman contributes a recipe chosen specifically to reflect what food was like when she was growing up under Mussolini. The narratives are separated by astringent, yet entertaining essay briefs, illuminating various aspects of gastronomic history and daily life in fascist Italy.

Engrossingly entertaining, Chewing the Fat gently debunks the myths of Italy’s gastronomic nostalgia industry, revealing a culture of food that is surprisingly different from the image most people have of Italian cuisine.

"A remarkable insight into the realities of Italian food. This book lays bare the multiple dimensions of Italian gastronomy: geography, politics, social background, education and economics. It is an eloquent dissection of the nuances of the world’s favorite cooking as well as a magical exercise in memory. A brilliant reconstruction of the kitchens and cookery (and much else besides) of a previous generation."

Review
Chewing the Fat is a step away from the Italian food history we think we know. Moyer-Nocchi artfully combines historical research with oral history to peel away the heroic myths and show the everyday work (and workers) of Italy’s gastronomic past.
- Zachary Nowak, Assoc. Director for the Food and Sustainability Studies Program, The Umbra Institute, Perugia

Review
This enchanting collection of interviews with very old women, talking at the end of their lives about memories of life and food during the fascist regime, is an evocative yet rigorous examination of traditional Italian gastronomy. Chewing the Fat places these interviews in the context of serious food history and offers a realistic appraisal of what is going on in kitchens and supermarkets today. Gently debunking some of the picturesque and much loved myths about Italian food, the author gives us fresh and realistic insights into the realities and delights of Italian cuisine. Her translation of the interviews is done with affection, tolerance, and generosity of spirit, balanced by informative, astringent commentary and essays, making this far more than a collection of reminiscences. This is a book for all lovers of Italy and its food.” -Gillian Riley, author of The Oxford Companion to Italian Food

An insider look
By Terciani
I have to start by saying that one of the woman featured in this book is my great-aunt. I met the author when she came to do her interview. There were many of us in the family who had come to hear my aunt talk about her life during the fascist era. We too were curious to hear her story. The author told us that this often happened when she went to do an interview, that the family members finally managed to take the time to listen to this family elder talk about her experiences. What I wanted to point out in particular in this review is how skillfully the author rendered the interview into the English narration. She really captured the personality of my aunt and I can hear her clearly through the translation. I think the work that Moyer-Nocchi is doing is so very important because we don’t take the time to listen to our elders, and the valuable insight they bring will be lost if no one bothers to go to the time and effort of valorizing and recording their experiences. It is not just about ignoring old people because we are too busy, we ignore that period of time in our past. We just don’t want to know, particularly about people like my aunt, who unfortunately was not contrary to the regime. But her perspective too is part of the collective, and she adds her viewpoint to the overall picture. If you want to get a slice of life picture of Italy’s past that you are not going to get anywhere else or in any other way, this is the book for you.

A refreshing approach!
By Lois H Bouchard
A new and previously-unthought-of perspective on Italian history under Fascism. The author has a great writing style and a brand new idea for understanding not only the Italian farm family's plight under Il Duce, but the migration of the poverty-stricken rural majority to the cities in search of better living conditions.

I really enjoyed reading the interviews with these venerable, strong women. I was amazed at their ability to survive as the last in each family to get any kind of nutrition. Not only were they strong, but they also showed great intelligence and perseverance in finding jobs in the face of depressed employment opportunities and indifference to the needs of females in general.

Each interview includes a favorite recipe truly indicative of the inventiveness of these women despite the desperate lack of resources. Most of them pooh-poohed the idea that these were actual recipes. Many of them were adamant that they just "cooked". The author includes an intermezzo after each interview expanding on what the interviewee said with facts about the time period and the laws and societal rules in that region at that time.

Read this book. You will enjoy it!

A must-read
By jennifer Carlisle
"This book grabbed my attention in unexpected ways; I found I could not put it down.
'Chewing the Fat' is a window on the real world of Italian cuisine--a first hand account of living, eating and surviving in Italy during the fascist Mussolini years, from the mouths of twenty women who lived through them. And it is this which so fascinates in Karima Moyer-Nocchi's admirable work. She has captured the moment via her thoughtful interviews of these survivors, many of whom are now in their nineties, which sets the story straight on this era of gastronomic Italian cultural history, and the mythology around "Italian Cuisine". Moyer-Nocchi realistically illustrates how Italian food during the fascist period was part and parcel of its context, and how that reality sheds light on more than one cultural myth surrounding the origins of Italian food as we know and love it.
In her wide-reaching research, Moyer-Nocchi sat face to face 'chewing the fat' with these women, talking and cooking with them from their own recipes, and deliciously serves-up foods and stories of the the town and the country dweller; the privileged and the poor alike. Their stories are their veritable swan songs, captured with heart, and an alert ear to their class and region. Moyer-Nocchi, American-born and living in Italy for the past two decades, translates their accents and dialects with respect to each woman's voice. Her translations resonate with a reverence and rich authenticity, recreating for English readers the flavor of these women's timeless characters. Thoroughly enjoyable, a great read, and a nourishing must-read for anyone interested in food and Italian Culture".

Two boys' review: Good read before you trick or treat
By Jared Castle
The book's message, "appearances can be quite deceiving," focuses on a spooky, old house with an elderly woman named Miz MGrizz. The little bears learn to not judge people unkindly by their appearance.

This is a tricky message as so much of the parental advice prior to Halloween is for kids to be on their guard.

The book does reinforce some great Halloween safety messages:

1. Stay in your own neighborhood.
2. Don't eat the treats until you get home and Mama Bear inspects them.

I also recommend these other Berenstain Bears' books:

Appearances Can Be Deceiving
By Janet Boyer
Like the book The Berenstain Bears' New Neighbors, The Berenstain Bears Trick or Treat is a book tackling the subject of prejudice and not judging people by appearances.

However, like the other book, Papa's animosity and presumption is just too over the top--and, in my opinion, reinforces prejudice rather than challenges it.

For example, on the next to the last page, the kids are happily eating their take from Trick or Treating. Papa asks them where the beautiful candy apples came from. Brother and Sister inform him that they came from old Miz McGrizz.

"From that scary-looking old grouch puss that lives down Crooked Lane?", he asks. While the kids were surprised at Mizz McGrizz's kindness and friendliness and learned a lesson about rumors and assumption, the book ends on a rather sour note with Papa Bear's judgmentalism. In my opinion, it reinforces stereotype about the elderly and small-town rumors about "scary old people" who live in a "haunted house".

I feel that The Berenstain Bears and the Prize Pumpkin is a far better book to celebrate the Fall season (although that one is more about thankfulness/Thanksgiving).

This book has great illustrations because of the night scenes, to be sure, but I don't like how the ending focuses mostly on Papa Bear's insult against Mizz McGrizz (although it's great that the kids, at least, realized the error of their assumption based on neighborhood legend...)

Good message- if it weren't a Halloween story
By Lexi
The Berenstain Bears Trick or Treat is a book I remember well from my childhood. The story starts out innocently enough with brother and sister bear comparing each other's costumes. Like most Berenstain Bears books, the story unwravels into a deeper subplot; a spooky elderly neighbor from across the street that brother and sister are afraid of. Papa tends to side with both, while Mama, being perhaps the only sensible family member of the series, tends to disagree with both as "appearances can be deciving" and that the cubs should give the women a chance.

When trick or treating comes along, Brother and Sister are still frightened by the whole ordeal, along with the other cubs coming along with them for their "trick or treat date". The Too Tall Gang, being much too trouble for their own good, randomly appear out of no where (as gangs tend to do) and have some plans of their own for the spooky neighbor, holding rolls of toilet paper in their hands for some good old Halloween fun. Brother and sister appear aprehensive about their plans for crimes, but decide to do so anyway. As the gang approches the house, they are stopped abruptly before the chance to toilet paper the women's house as she steps out to see what all the fuss is about.

The cubs are exsaperated with fear to be invited into the women's house. When they enter the house, however, they are shocked to be greeted by a batch of candy apples! Noticing none appear to have been take, Brother and Sister ask her about this, where she implies that no one had come all night. Brother and sister then realize how silly they were for being so biogted against their neighbor. Despite her old age and creepy looking tree house, she is a kind old lady who means well, with delicious candy apples for all. Both come home that night, shocking Papa out of his ignorance and having Mama Bear smile gloatingly in an "I told you so sort of way" as we learn along with the cubs that, indeed it's true, appearances are deciving.

It is when the book ends with Brother and Sister delightfully biting out of a candy apple, sinking their teeth into it's caramel coating that the book takes a disturbing turn for the worst. This is Halloween, not a day where all your family knows each other and gives you non poisioned, razor free treats. Well, maybe in Bear Country, where everyone seems to know each other, but no. The elderly women described in the book is a complete and absolute stranger. However, despite Mama Bear's strict warnings of staying in their own neighborhood as a hint of stranger danger for politically corret parents, Brother and Sister go into the house of a women they don't know, and Mama and Papa do not object to this. In fact, they encourage the chomping of their candy apples!

This is not a bad book, mind you, despite the poorly choosen aesop. The moral of the story is actually a pretty good one: Don't judge a book by it's cover. It also implies elderly respect since, as one can articulate, the women in this story is a creepy looking old hag, who tends to be a sweet caretaker with sweets for all who dare but enter. The only thing about this book that always got under my skin and just couldn't settle with me was the fact that a story about trusting a stranger is told amongst Halloween night. It's a rather weird and ironic message for the theme. And no, I'm not telling you this book is trash that should be disputed into a paper shredder by tomorrow night. It means well... it's just... another puzzling aspect of my childhood. But buy and it shall be a puzzling aspect of your child's life too.

Types of Social Structure in Eastern Indonesia (Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde), by Franciscus Antonius Evert Woude

BY G. W. LOCHER Some years ago, in a discussion of the modern concept of structure, Levi-Strauss contended that the extraordinarily widespread employment of the term "structure" since 1930 reflected a rediscovery of the concept and the term rather than the continuation of a prior usage. This assertion may be correct in general, but it does not apply to the N ether lands, at least nOlI: so far as the concept of structure is concerned. The transmission of the concept in that country can in fact be quite easily traced. It began in 1917 with the publication by van Ossenbruggen of a study of the Javanese notion of montja-pat,l a paper which was in fluenced to a high degree by the famous monograph by Durkheim and Mauss, "De quelques formes primitives de classification", which had been published at the beginning of the century. 2 An even clearer structural approach is to be found in the extensive Leiden thesis of 3 W. H. Rassers, De Pandji-Roman. This dissertation itself refers with particular emphasis to van Ossenbruggen's paper and to the monograph by Durkheim and Mauss, as well as to various other publications by them. The ,studies later made by Rassers were also of such a kind that when a collection of them was published in English in 1959, under the title Panji, The Culture Hero, 4 they were aptly subtitled "A Structural Study of Religion in Java".
