. . . intriguing and mildly disturbing

Do Go Gentle is a nobly written biography and autobiography. Mr. Stookey, 83 years old, is found lying face up on the floor next to his bed. The diagnosis: He has suffered from a severe stroke, the right size of his body from head to toe is paralyzed, and he is unable to speak or swallow. With no signs of improvement, the family is faced with a decision - to move Mr. Stookey to a nursing home or bring him home to die by withholding food and water.

Do Go Gentle is intriguing and mildly disturbing. Many questions come to mind such as: What other solutions could have been made? Did the son (also the author of the book) do his best in accurately upholding his father's wishes based on the little information his father provided? Or did the son assume his father's wishes and interpret "clues" to justify his decisions? What were these so-called clues? Could they have been interpreted differently? Were Mr. and Mrs. Stookey and the daughter, Lori, in full agreement with the son's "plan"? or did they simply go along with what was already decided? What does the story really reveal?
Although recounting real events, this book reads like fiction -- captivating and suspenseful. Why did Mrs. Stookey have a blank look when the nurse asked for Mr. Stookey's advanced directive? Why did Mrs. Stookey, the son, Chris, and the daughter, Lori, not know Mr. Stookey's emergency arrangements and yet . . . . how does the ten-year family doctor whom the son never met previously, presume to explicitly articulate Mr. Stookey's wishes? What really was the "Hemlock file" and why didn't the son share this file earlier on? Lastly, who exactly is Mr. Stookey and why is his life story, in and of itself, so inspirational?

I highly recommend Do Go Gentle for anyone who has a loved one. I also recommend this book as a primary source and required reading for college courses dealing with humanities and ethics.

Throughout the book, the son reveals love and admiration for his father. My favorite quote: 'I must have been three or four years old . . . I'm holding onto [my dad's] head and we're both smiling at the camera. We look happy.' - Chris Stookey

Important account of a debilitating stroke

This is a well-written, careful, compassionate look at how a doctor/son decides what to do when his father has a debilitating stroke. Fortunately his father had made clear that he would not have wanted to live in such a condition and, fortunately too, the family was OK with the painful decision to bring him home but not provide food and fluids. This is a long, difficult way to die. Some form of legal assisted dying would have been merciful and more consistent with his long-expressed wishes. The situation of a debilitating stroke is not unusual and can present an endless, expensive, tragic nightmare for a family if they haven't discussed what the person would want. This is an important little book. I recommend it to anyone who is a parent or an adult child.

Wow!! Charge with murder of his wife and sent to prison for life. Lost his money, his family property/house, lost everything but his stepdaughter who helps him break out of prison! So exciting!! The adventure they go on and what happens. People they run into and who betrays them. Also his stepdaughter has a secret that could just destroy them and their forbidden love. Great love story, must read!!

Hero should have gotten restraining order and lawyer fast on this one against heroine;)

I liked the book but hero was no alpha. The heroine was cray cray, and I mean get restraining order fast because this girl's love is going to end up killing hero someday. I kind of felt it was a Lolita love story, if you know what I mean. Anyway heroine got what she wanted. Hero push over and well cornered. Felt sorry for him at times. Still he loved heroine so he forgave her and stuck with her. Bought it and may read again, maybe, because I like a good cray cray love story every know and then, and the prison break was nice element to it. Excellent overview of Christian outreach among Australian Aboriginal peoples

John Harris has done an outstanding service for all Australians through compiling this overview of Christian outreach among Aboriginal people. I was blind to the treatment and issues faced by Aboriginal people since the English first settled in Australia. I am delighted to know now about the Australian heroes who left their own homes and cultures to proclaim Jesus Christ to Aboriginal cultures/peoples. This huge book has been very helpful to understand the situations throughout Australia from both the settlers/white Australian and Aboriginal perspectives. I am looking forward to reading in the future his summary of the develops in Aboriginal treatment and evangelistic outreach, especially amongst indigenous Aboriginal churches, since the Mabo court case. I would thoroughly recommend this book to both Christian Australians and secular Australians. Some people may not admire the missionaries' motives. I admire such people who tried to protect and bring benefit to the Aboriginals. It has been interesting to read how the early missionaries and settlers could just not fathom the culturally different world views of the Aboriginals. I trust I will be able to care for Aboriginal Australians much better after the insights I have gathered from this great book.

A must read book.

I think this book has opened my eyes to historic attitudes of early explorers it mind that could not understand people of different colour and non English language and different ways of life. The Australian Aborigine was a unique race of people who had freedom to roam and exist and live with their own ethical code of conduct. Progressive Governors and leading churchmen could not always comprehend that there were other creatures who occupied a new land as traditional owners who saw invaders of contrasting colour that appeared aggressive and invasive to their land. The early explorers thought they were superior to something they had never before encountered, a people who could not communicate in their language whose only natural weapon was a spear and a bend a stick, a boomerang, for daily gathering of food. Typical of many invaders they raped and pillaged and brought foreign diseases that killed and maimed these innocent people. A different history that I was taught in school in the 1930's. An excellent book that needs a reprint and widely advertised and distributed.

A must read for all Australians

This book is a superb historical account of certain Christian groups' attempts to help the Australian indigenous population to deal with the European invasion of their lands. It deals honestly with the successes and failures of these people as they worked with the communities. It is a must read for those who are seeking to understand the Indigenous people of today.

This book has been out of print for quite a while and its updated version (to mid-1993 events)and its return in a digital format will, I am sure, be welcomed by many new readers seeking to broaden their understanding of the issues as relating to the Australian Indigenous communities. It still contains the many illustrations, maps, references and footnotes which allow the serious reader to be able to follow up on issues of interest.

Pretty good book for advanced readers

It is definitely not for beginners. You should have some background in QM before starting on this book. Takes a bit long to read through because the concepts are deep and are not explicitly explained. But, it really helps the thinking process. It covers each topic deeper than most of the books. The problems at the end of each chapter require special mention. Overall, it helps one to apply QM to wide and deep range of problems in theoretical physics (not to be confused with applied QM books that can be used only for applied physics or engineering problems)

Outstanding Quantum Mechanics Book !!!!

This is truly an outstanding Quantum Mechanics book!!! Those who disagree are nothing but a bunch of weak sissy whinners who should not be in grad school taking grad level physics in the first place!!! When I was a graduate student in physics at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, I had the distinct honor and privilege of taking a class from Professor Hecht and now looking back I can honestly say that he was simply "the best" physics professor I ever had. Yes, the material covered was hard and professor Hecht gave very, very, very tough homework problems and exams BUT of all the physics classes I ever took (and I might add that I took many for my physics PhD), the one professor Hecht taught was the one I learned the most from and remember most fondly. Professor Hecht, you did an outstanding job... stand up and be proud!!!
