About the Author

WILLIAM K. KLINGAMAN holds a Ph.D. in American History from the University of Virginia and has taught at the University of Virginia and the University of Maryland. He is the author of six previous books, including histories of the years 1918, 1929, and 1941.

NICHOLAS P. KLINGAMAN holds a Ph.D. in Meteorology from the University of Reading, where he is now a research scientist. His work focuses on investigating the effects of climate change on tropical weather patterns.

The Lost Summer

On April 5, 1815, the volcano Tambora on the island of Sumbawa began to erupt, culminating in a massive explosion on April 11-12. This event was the largest known volcanic eruption in the last 2,000 years, 100 times more powerful than Mt. St Helens in 1980, and 10 times as strong as the famous eruption of Krakatau in 1883. The blast pushed an estimated 55 million tons of sulphur dioxide gas into the atmosphere, producing a fine aerosol that blocked the sun and lowered temperatures around the world.

Europe and the Northeast United States began to feel the effects of Mt. Tambora's eruption almost a year later in 1816, when its impact on the atmosphere and the jet stream began to change the weather. The late spring and early summer of that year were extremely cold, with snow and ice appearing as late as June. The summer and the growing seasons were also very short, as the cold weather resumed in August and September. In that era, few people had any idea that a volcanic eruption could lower global temperatures, although Benjamin Franklin suspected as much after observing the effects that an eruption of the Icelandic volcano Laki had on Europe in 1783. Speculation in America and Europe was rife as to whether the cold weather foretold a coming judgment day, or whether sunspots meant that the sun was radiating less heat, or whether perhaps the sun was simply burning out. Even those who did not fear an apocalypse did not know how long the bad weather would last.

Set against the cold weather that the volcano put in motion is the human story of 1816. "The Year Without a Summer" explains what happened in, among other countries, France, where the government of a newly restored King Louis XVIII tried to manage the unrest caused by crop failure; Britain, where the government declined to help the poor of England or the starving citizens of Ireland; New England and Virginia, where the cold weather and resulting crop failures triggered waves of emigration to the Ohio Valley and other points west; and Switzerland, the hardest hit European country, where starvation was rampant and 1816-17 became known as the "Hungerjahre."

William Klingaman is the author of several other well-received books about important years in history: 1919 The Year Our World Began, 1929: The Year of the Great Crash, and 1941: Our Lives in a World on the Edge. His co-author, Nicholas Klingaman, is a meteorologist at the University of Reading. The two authors have done an excellent job of combining their talents to produce a narrative that captures the life and times of 1816 and the years around it, as well as the volcano-induced weather catastrophe that turned those times upside down. The book offers a lot of interesting digressions along paths as diverse as the discovery and observation of sunspots, the final fall of Napoleon Bonaparte, the career of future British Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel, the legacy of President James Madison, 19th century agriculture, the American presidential and congressional elections of 1816, and the genesis, on the dark, rainy shores of Lake Genevea, of Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" and John Polidori's "The Vampyre" (the latter is less well known than Shelley's famous work, but utltimately inspired Bram Stoker's "Dracula")

All in all, "The Year Without Summer" was a very enjoyable and informative read that reminded me of Krakatoa: The Day the World Exploded: August 27, 1883 (though the story arc is a bit reversed: "The Year Without Summer" devotes only its opening chapter to the volcanic eruption that sets the events of 1816 in motion, while Winchester's work tends to build toward the volcanic eruption itself).

Good historical narrative

This book presents a good historical narrative of the volcanic eruption of mt. tambura in indonesia in late 1815 and the consequences the following summer. The weather pattern at the time caused the volcanic particles to remain in the atmosphere rather than fall with the rain over the pacific. The result was less sunlight in new england and western europe. New England was very cold and dry the summer of 1816 with snow in june. The major impact was that the crops failed and the bad weather continued into 1817. Many farm families moved out of the northeast and migrated to Ohio,Penn.,and Indiana. The introduction of oatmeal as a staple food was related as wheat and corn became scarce. Western Europe saw cold, wet, damp conditions and their crops rotted in the fields.England passed the first of the welfare laws to allievate the starving poor while many (3,000) fled Ireland to the united states. France also had to deal with political unrest due to the many destitute that revolted against the high cost of bread. The first hundred pages allows the reader to appreciate the impact of a volcanic eruption has on global climate. The author does repeat often the weather conditions a bit too much-(april was cold,may cold,june still cold) which may cause some readers to browse the middle of the book. Sometimes the narrative gets off topic (the byron-shelly story) so after reading the book (279 pages) one gets that there was padding to reach the page count. The final rating should be 3.5 stars as the true core of the book would clock in at about 200 pages. However, the main impetus of the book succeeds where it should, allowing the reader to better understand 1816-the year without a summer.

A Fascinating Look at the "Polar Vortex" Impact

All of us probably check the daily weather forecast to see how it will affect our plans. In fact, the weather portion of televised news is typically the highest rated segment, so much so that it now has its own channels and websites worldwide. And, like me, you likely know or suspect this is so.

What I didn't know are some of the underlying causes for these atmospheric changes and the unintended consequences on macro as well as up-close-and-personal levels. William K. and Nicholas P. Klingamans' collaborative work, "The Year Without Summer: 1816 and the Volcano that Darkened the World and Changed History," is a remarkable exploration and portrait of how the weather can be affected by an unexpected event and literally the subsequent fall out on the course of human events.

The triggering event for this journey is the April 1815 colossal eruption of Mount Tambora in Indonesia. The blast was heard more than 900 miles away in Java by lieutenant-governor Thomas Stafford Raffles (in 1819 to be involved with the founding of the City and Colony of Singapore). Local British naval commanders explored the source of the noise and discovered days at noon that were pitch black with the smoke from the eruption and seas chocked full for up to three miles with volcanic pumice.

Little did they know then that the soot, ash and particularly the sulphur plumes had blasted through the troposphere into the stratosphere, or highest level of the atmosphere, to combine with water and form a sulphuric acid aerosol cloud that would circulate around the globe driven by the "polar vortex" winds and within a year reflect back sunlight to cool parts of the Earth in more temperate zones.

It is now 1816 and this is where the story really takes off: the War of 1812 for the Americans has ended; the British under Wellington have defeated Napoleon at Waterloo and exiled him to Saint Helena; the French are still struggling to realize a government based on republican or monarchy concepts; most of the underprivileged and poor in Ireland, France and other parts of Europe are just barely making ends meet; Jane Austin is writing "Emma", Shelley Bysshe Shelley penning "Mont Blanc" and traveling in Europe with Mary Godwin - soon to be telling her own tale, "Frankenstein" - and George Gordon Byron completing "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage" and "The Prisoner of Chillon" epic poems. A dynamic canvas against which tumultuous events will rapidly unfold.

Through painstaking collection of local almanacs, diary entries, newspaper articles, legislative records and other histories the Klingamans have woven the threads into a tapestry depicting the unexpected impact of sustained cold, rain, flooding, wide crop failures and unprepared governments on lives from the very rich to the very poor - as if it were today. They follow the story lines through to 1817 and beyond on the broad social and selected personal themes.

If there is any criticism it might be with the repetition of some of the weather descriptions though, I suspect, this is by design: to draw us into the world as the people were living it then. It is a very different and refreshing approach to history - through the lens of meteorology.

One of the principles of Chaos Theory is called the "Butterfly Effect," which essentially posits that small changes in the initial conditions lead to drastic changes in the results. Had a butterfly not flapped its wings at just the right point in space and time, say, a Brazilian jungle, would a hurricane in China have not occurred? Might the same be said about the debated causes of global warming today - except that some of these are man-made so the consequences may not be so arbitrary...

Excellent book, outlining the link between the skin and the emotions. Used this to research a literature review for counselling course. It became my most valued resource amongst many journals and texts. It was also confirming as to my own personal experiences with a child with severe AD. A must read for anyone affected personally or socially with dermatitis or other chronic illnesses.

This book is 250 pages of knowledge. It covers everything you need in order to pass the MBLEx. Great MBLEx Study Guide

This study guide is a necessity for anyone preparing for the MBLEx exam, thanks to the MBLEX Exam Preparation Team. The guide has comprehensive reviews, shares a number of test-taking strategies and tips, and even includes practice test questions. Specifically, it focuses on numerous subjects that are vital to success, including kinesiology and ethics. The variety of subjects was very useful because they are so detailed and really cover everything you need to know. Pathology? Check. Physiology? Check. Anatomy? Also there. Much of what the book mentions you SHOULD know based on what you've learned as you prepare but it's very helpful to go back over some topics because you never know what you might be rusty on. The practice test was very helpful and covered all of the topics you'd expect on the exam. The answer key even offers explanations, which I found extremely helpful, because sometimes I don't understand why the answer is the answer, if you get my drift. The best part? It's guaranteed you'll raise your score. How can you go wrong with that? I thought it was easy to follow along with and was very clear from start to finish. It was formatted perfectly and was easy to go through whether you are a stronger reader than others. A must-have if you want to ensure you do well with the MBLEx Exam!

This guide is a must have for anyone prepping for the MBLEX. First of all, this guide is a 2017 edition, so I know that it has the most up to date content. Many of the other guides that I saw were from last year and beyond, so this was a big deal to me (and also something to watch out for). This guide is well written and easy to understand. This guide is broken up into sections, so you can go right to the area that you want to focus on without having to do a ton of searching or reading the guide from cover to cover to get the most out of it, which saved me a lot of time! I also thought that the practice questions were very similar to those on the real test, so I felt more confident about my score. I would recommend this guide to others who are looking for a general idea of what to expect and a good guide for a great price.

Not only have we provided mathematics teachers with many forms of professional development but we have also visited the classrooms of hundreds of teachers in many different types of communities and been inspired by observing situations where mathematical understanding is clearly a goal that is being realized. We call the kind of teaching that goes on in these classrooms "Standards-based," referring to the Standards documents produced by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), the most recent of which is the Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (PSSM, 2000). All mathematics teachers can implement Standards based instruction in their classrooms, and all students can benefit from this experience.

We trust that the assistance provided through this book and through your pre-service and in-service classes will help you enjoy a career that is person ally and professionally satisfying. And we hope that mathematical thinking will become a common part of your students' lives.

ORGANIZATION OF THE TEXT

Teaching Mathematics for the 21st Century contains twelve chapters organized into three overall parts. The first five chapters provide both theoretical and practical suggestions concerning what you should know and consider before you "step on the stage" of your first classroom. Chapters 6 through 10 discuss the ongoing realities of the classroom—planning and fine-tuning daily lessons, managing classrooms where discourse is valued, assessing and evaluating students, and dealing with issues of equity as they affect the classroom. The final two chapters look to your future as a member of a professional community, both in how you relate to constituents outside of education and how you avail yourself of ongoing professional growth activities as a lifelong learner. Within each part, the chapters are independent and can be studied in any order.

Part I: Prior to Entering the Classroom

Chapter 1, "History and Introduction to Mathematics Education Reform," provides extensive background about the history and development of the significant concepts leading to the current reform. The chapter details methods of teaching mathematics throughout the last half of the 20th century. We discuss research in cooperative learning and offer practical suggestions for implementing cooperative learning, one of the common activities in contemporary teaching practice. The mathematical focus of the activities in this chapter is logic.

Chapter 2, "Learning, Motivation, and Basic Management Skills," begins by discussing the main learning theories and models of intelligence that underlie the educational psychology behind reform in mathematics education. The section on motivation introduces some main concepts of the topic. Aspects of motivation are interwoven with the selection of activities and instructional design throughout the book. The second half of the chapter is devoted to decisions related to management skills teachers need before the first day of class. Examples and problems center on probability. Different approaches to probability tasks illustrate different theories of learning. Motivation and management issues also come into play with this content area, since probability tasks most often involve hands-on activities.

Chapter 3, "Concrete to Abstract With Tools, Manipulatives, Computer Programs, and Calculators," introduces a variety of methods to increase the preservice teacher's tool kit of teaching ideas. An effective way to explore this chapter is with a series of stations using the different manipulatives and calculators in a round-robin laboratory setting. Groups of students spend a given time at each station to become familiar with the available manipulative, and then they rotate to the next station. If class sets are available, lessons and activities using the MIRA, patty paper, and graphing calculators can be done more easily with the entire class working simultaneously on the same exercise in cooperative groups. Of course, the computer activities can be supplemented according to the computer software available at your site. The unifying topics for this chapter consist of the foundational concepts of arithmetic, geometry, and algebra. Secondary teachers need to understand the concept development approach to mathematics both as a preferred way of introducing new topics and as an approach to intervention.

Chapter 4, "Standards-Based Curricula With Sample Lessons," provides an opportunity to explore elements of different reform curricula, including sample materials from some programs. The chapter contrasts and compares segments of instructional sequences within some exemplary middle- and high-school programs. The emphasis is on data analysis activities incorporating methods of data collection (including the use of probeware) and ways to analyze data. What better content to link with reform materials than data analysis, since it effectively meshes the Technology Principle with the Representation and Communication Standards of the PSSM?

Chapter 5, "Geometry and Algebra Redefined?" explores the current development of these areas of mathematics and illustrates effective ways to integrate them. Algebra and geometry activities in the chapter provide the vehicle for this discussion.

Part II: Teaching and Learning in the Classroom

The second part of the text begins with Chapter 6, "Planning Instruction." This chapter starts with an overview of the teacher's community and school culture. Next, a discussion of semester, unit, and daily planning gives examples for each stage in the planning process. The chapter highlights different strategies for effective lessons based on the materials to be studied. The examples and problems in this chapter focus on matrices and their applications, as that topic lends itself to many different grade levels and applications.

Chapter 7, "Promoting Communication in the Classroom," presents a view of discipline as an integral part of instruction and classroom communication. We offer practical suggestions for promoting discourse, encouraging communication through student writing, and building a community of learners. Illustrations and problems are drawn from the discrete mathematics topics of graph theory and group theory, both of which lend themselves well to various types of classroom communication.

In Chapter 8, "Assessing Individual Student Performance," we introduce formative assessment and summative assessment (evaluation). The discussion includes basic test design and grade determination, topics of great concern to beginning teachers. Activities involving patterns in mathematics illustrate the importance of assessing students' mathematical reasoning in a Standards based classroom.

The topic of Chapter 9, "Student Equity," is complex and broad. This chapter serves only as an introduction to some of the equity issues facing teachers. The prevailing issue throughout the chapter is how to make mathematics accessible to all students. A discussion of the effects of tracking is followed by considerations of effective ways to help multicultural/multiethnic students, females, gifted/ talented students, and students with mild learning difficulties to be successful in mathematics. The mathematical emphasis of this chapter is nonstandard problems that are rich in content yet open to a variety of solution approaches.

Chapter 10, "Focus on Performance Assessment," extends the discussion of assessment in Chapter 8 by exploring the use of performance tasks and rubric scoring. In our experience, the area of assessment has grown so complex, with alternative methods unfamiliar to student teachers, that it is best to approach assessment in two different chapters with time between to absorb this broad and very important aspect of Standards based teaching. The role of externally mandated assessments also is presented. The chapter also touches on uses of the Internet by mathematics students and their families. Investigations in applied mathematics and modeling allow students to practice writing solutions that are assessed by rubrics.

Part III: Ongoing Development

The third part of this text opens with Chapter 11, "Communicating With Parents and Community." This chapter demonstrates effective ways to interact with parents, the school community, and other mathematics students. Topics include managing back-to-school nights, parent conferences, family mathematics nights, and entry into mathematics contests. The mathematical content comprises number sense, estimation, and measurement, all of which are mathematical tasks that can be connected to real-life experiences....

This book is rambling, incoherent, repetitive, intellectually dishonest and manipulative. It presents a extreme, one-sided interpretation of the 1989 NCTM math standards as universally recognized, research-based "best practice."
I would recommend that anyone choosing texts for a math methods course use the 2000 NCTM standards themselves and, if necessary, a generic teaching methods text.
The 2000 Standards document is economical, beautifully done and, most importantly, far closer to a consensus of teachers, teacher educators, mathematicians and psychologists on what constitutes best practice than the 1989 document which inspires this text.

Useful Aid. Don't pay too much attention to scaled scores.

This book was worth the $25 I spent. I bought it because AAMC only offers about 8 practice MCATs for purchase, and I did not want to use all of them in case I had to retake the test. Some key differences between the Kaplan and official AAMC Practice tests (on e-mcat.com) are:
(1) The physical sciences in Kaplan are more calculation intensive than AAMC. I believe this practice in doing more calculation-heavy PS sections really helped me on the real test. (2) The Kaplan scale for scores is waaaaay more lax than AAMC. I scored a 14 in Physical Sciences on one and I missed like 8-10 questions. No way. (3) The biological sciences sections are a bit easier than AAMC, but still good practice. I felt like the Kaplan Verbal sections were a bit harder, but, again, good practice.
While studying, I switched off between the companies' FLs; I would take an AAMC FL one day, then a Kaplan FL a few days later, then AAMC a few days after that etc until the big day. My AAMC practice range was 28-30. My Kaplan practice range was 27-35. I went in hoping and praying for a balanced 30, since I felt the Kaplan scores were a bit unrealistic. My real score: a balanced 33.
Overall, I felt that this was a valuable resource of full length practice tests, and would recommend it. I believe that using this book as a study tool resulted in the +4 point difference between my actual score and my AAMC practice average. That being said, don't read into Kaplan's predictive scaled scores too much. It will give you false hope.

Not accurate?

I've heard Kaplan does not do a great job of mimicking the actual test. I would go with Examkrackers for the Verbal section, especially.

Also, this book has a lot of typos. Sometimes the questions and the answer key do not match...

About the Author

Brenda Phillips is Professor of Political Science, Oklahoma State University. She co-edited Women and Disasters: From Theory to Practice, and is the author of Disaster Recovery and the lead researcher for a National Council on Disability project titled Effective Emergency Management: Making Improvements for Communities and People with Disabilities. Professor Phillips has conducted research on disaster vulnerability since 1982, beginning as a student of E.L. Quarantelli at The Ohio State University's Disaster Research Center. Her published research can be found in a variety of journals including the International Journal of Mass Emergencies and Disasters,Disaster Prevention, Disasters, Humanity and Society, the Journal of Emergency Management, Natural Hazards Review, and Environmental Hazards. She has been funded multiple times by the National Science Foundation to study disasters and vulnerable populations.
