A waste of money

55 pages of nothing you won't find on Microsoft AX website.
It's a fraud to call this a book. In no way relevant security issues in AX are adressed.

try the advice
By W Boudville
Indeed the book is skimpy; but at least note that the publisher offers it at a price that acknowledges this.

Care has been taken with the screen shots of AX 2012. They clearly show the text in the windows. You get enough information in the images to appreciate the accompanying narrative. You might perhaps think this should always be so. Not necessarily. I have seen other computer texts, including I have to say, some from this publisher, where the screen shots are lousy. Typically the images are too dark. These might be sometimes for graphics software, where the screen shots are of computer generated characters in a 3 dimensional environment.

I have not seen the official Microsoft documentation for this product. But I am guessing that the value of the book is in how it offers a guide to what is important in the documentation. Typically such documentation is voluminous. What Moustafa provides are assessments. These he calls 'must know', 'should know' and 'become an expert'. The various sections of the book are labelled with one of these. So if you want to rapidly focus on learning the key aspects of AX 2012, try his advice.

FROM THE NATIONAL BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF BRAND WARFARE

A genuine winner shows you how to stand out from the crowd

As the youngest-ever CEO of John Hancock Financial Services and the bestselling author of Brand Warfare, David D'Alessandro knows plenty about breaking away from the pack. In Career Warfare, this ultimate insider tells the true story of how he learned the unwritten rules of corporate ladder climbing.

In his signature, outspoken style, D'Alessandro offers concrete advice on building a reputation that commands respect, coping with office politics, and surviving the less-than-sane aspects of any organization. He explains why only 20 percent of the people in a given corporation are truly valuable to the organization, demonstrates the right way to polish the boss's image and prevent the boss from tarnishing the reader's, and provides valuable lessons in the etiquette of reputation building.

Through engaging, often-hilarious stories drawn from his own dramatic climb to the top, David D'Alessandro speaks to success-oriented readers at every level and explains:

  • How to make people want to take a chance on them

  • How to gain and keep a great reputation

  • Why success will not proceed in a rational manner

  • Why hard work and accomplishment aren't enough

  • What character has to do with it

Helping Me Become Better In Business
By Kae0_o.
I do admin support and have never held a leadership position. I also worry about leaving a positive professional legacy wherever I go. In these matters, this book resonated with my values, and gave some great tips on how to make myself stand out while remaining authentic and sincere. It's also helped me understand some of executive management's actions and behaviors. For someone who doesn't have firsthand experience with those roles, but is expected to support these types, this insight has been invaluable.

I interact more confidently with executive management now, and have gotten more positive feedback from these types directly and indirectly since reading this book. I have gradually been given a larger scope of autonomy over my work and influence over others without a formal authority position, which I find a huge achievement. I've figured out how to leverage my work ethic and achievements for optimum gain in career development and advancement, how and when to ask for what I want, and what type of people I should look to for mentorship. I think for anyone with ambition who wants a surefire method to building a successful career, this book will be a satisfying, insightful read. I bought this on Kindle but will probably buy it again in hardback so I can have it handy to pick up and browse through for refreshers without scrolling through my phone. It's worth the money and I will probably be buying other pieces from David's Warfare Series. Highly recommend.

Not quite Machiavelli, but good counsel for the aspiring business prince
By John Bonavia
Definitely worth reading for the war stories alone! But I've never quite understood the urge to publish in people who by all evidence were focused above all on personal power and financial success. D'Alessandro strenuously maintains that the ambitious executive's aim should always be the good of the organization and those involved with it, but it's hard to see who really benefited from the de-mutualization of John Hancock, over which he presided, other than John Hancock executives: same could be said of the later sale of the company to Manulife Financial (oddly, also run by a D. D'Alessandro, no relation). At least, such is the general view, especially among those who were pink-slipped.

Still, although we're not getting the whole story of a career here - it's a how-to, not a history - there is certainly a pleasing openness in describing many events and relationships, and the author's rise from that grocery store in Utica. He is naturally interested in the stories of other famous names in business and has found some great anecdotes: for instance, about John H. Patterson the founder of NCR: he had, quoting Mark Bernstein, "an absolute genius for firing people," including the executive who discovered he was fired when he found his office furniture on the NCR front lawn - in flames. . . But lesser mortals also are noteworthy, including the interviewee in the Chinese restaurant who thought the slim, tortilla-like moo shu pancake was a hot towel and slapped it on her face...

Good cautionary tales about "loose lips sink ships," such as the consultants who lost a multi-million dollar engagement when some of their private discussions came to the wrong (or right) ears...I'm pretty sure I know which firm that was, having (full disclosure!) been a computer consultant at John Hancock, and later Manulife, for several years.

And I really like his classification of meetings into three types: Staff, Get-something-done, and Combat!

D'Alessandro is rightly proud of his Italian ancestry (at least we have one thing in common!), but does not come over as a total Machiavelli. However, there is a certain ruthlessness: he is not at all the forgiving type. The word "Vendetta" springs irresistibly to mind. In fact, one section's heading makes an explicit reference - "You can enjoy a dish best served cold."

All in all, a pretty good read, and I'm sure very useful to the young aspiring executive...not exactly for me, as I never headed that way, being more of a technician/practitioner.

Go forth and be successful, but do it deliberately.
By Amazon Customer
I read this book after graduating with an MBA (BS in Comp. Sci.) to gain insight into how to market myself. My only criticism is that this book wasn't available when I graduated with my Bachelor's Degree 11 years ago. Like most people (including Mr. D'Alessandro by his own admission), I have made some mistakes in my career. This book helped me recognize those mistakes (in retrospect) and evaluate them.

Others here have described the book in great detail, so I won't. Instead, I'll say that if you're new to the working world, stagnating in your current job, wanting a new career or promotion, or just starting a new job as a leader with aspirations for more, read this book! Reflect on your past and learn from it. Then go forth and be successful!

Who shouldn't read this book? Those who are happy with the status quo of their self, their career, and their life. Those who are not ambitious (not everybody is, and that's OK). And lastly, those you work with, for they need to know nothing about your implementation plans for your brand and your career.

If you don't believe this branding 'stuff' is real, take a look at pricing for premier products and compare them to lower priced products or, gulp!, a generic. Hand soap, shampoo, engine oil, CPUs (Intel vs. AMD). How many of you really believe that $10 soap is really going to clean 10x (1000%) better than $1 soap? I'm not suggesting there aren't differences because there are (some perceived, some real). They just may not total up to 10x better, which is precisely my point. Wouldn't you rather be paid 10x more (or even 2x more for that matter) because of your premier personal brand? If you're happy as a generic, great! There's a place for those, too. Just not on the top shelf.

NATIONAL BESTSELLER

Stephen Hawking has dazzled readers worldwide with a string of bestsellers exploring the mysteries of the universe. Now, for the first time, perhaps the most brilliant cosmologist of our age turns his gaze inward for a revealing look at his own life and intellectual evolution.

My Brief History recounts Stephen Hawking’s improbable journey, from his postwar London boyhood to his years of international acclaim and celebrity. Lavishly illustrated with rarely seen photographs, this concise, witty, and candid account introduces readers to a Hawking rarely glimpsed in previous books: the inquisitive schoolboy whose classmates nicknamed him Einstein; the jokester who once placed a bet with a colleague over the existence of a particular black hole; and the young husband and father struggling to gain a foothold in the world of physics and cosmology.

Writing with characteristic humility and humor, Hawking opens up about the challenges that confronted him following his diagnosis of ALS at age twenty-one. Tracing his development as a thinker, he explains how the prospect of an early death urged him onward through numerous intellectual breakthroughs, and talks about the genesis of his masterpiece A Brief History of Time—one of the iconic books of the twentieth century.

Clear-eyed, intimate, and wise, My Brief History opens a window for the rest of us into Hawking’s personal cosmos.

"Stephen Hawking [has] a brain of enviable vastness, seeing and understanding things that lie way beyond most of us... His modesty is engaging" Daily Mail "Hawking writes movingly... we hear his voice radiating directly from the black hole of his motor neuron disease, without the amplification and elaboration supplied by the co-authors with whom he wrote his last few books" Financial Times "A concise, gleaming portrait" Nature "Powerful... [his] brevity makes for a bold picture" Guardian "Read it for the personal nuggets... But above all, it's worth reading for its message of hope" Mail on Sunday

Hawking / MY BRIEF HISTORY

1

Childhood

My father, Frank, came from a line of tenant farmers in Yorkshire, England. His grandfather—my great-grandfather John Hawking—had been a wealthy farmer, but he had bought too many farms and had gone bankrupt in the agricultural depression at the beginning of this century. His son Robert—my grandfather—tried to help his father but went bankrupt himself. Fortunately, Robert’s wife owned a house in Boroughbridge in which she ran a school, and this brought in a small amount of income. They thus managed to send their son to Oxford, where he studied medicine.

My father won a series of scholarships and prizes, which enabled him to send money back to his parents. He then went into research in tropical medicine, and in 1937 he traveled to East Africa as part of his research. When the war began, he made an overland journey across Africa and down the Congo River to get a ship back to England, where he volunteered for military service. He was told, however, that he was more valuable in medical research.

My mother was born in Dunfermline, Scotland, the third of eight children of a family doctor. The eldest was a girl with Down syndrome, who lived separately with a caregiver until she died at the age of thirteen. The family moved south to Devon when my mother was twelve. Like my father’s family, hers was not well off. Nevertheless, they too managed to send my mother to Oxford. After Oxford, she had various jobs, including that of inspector of taxes, which she did not like. She gave that up to become a secretary, which was how she met my father in the early years of the war.

I was born on January 8, 1942, exactly three hundred years after the death of Galileo. I estimate, however, that about two hundred thousand other babies were also born that day. I don’t know whether any of them was later interested in astronomy.

I was born in Oxford, even though my parents were living in London. This was because during World War II, the Germans had an agreement that they would not bomb Oxford and Cambridge, in return for the British not bombing Heidelberg and Gttingen. It is a pity that this civilized sort of arrangement couldn’t have been extended to more cities.

We lived in Highgate, in north London. My sister Mary was born eighteen months after me, and I’m told I did not welcome her arrival. All through our childhood there was a certain tension between us, fed by the narrow difference in our ages. In our adult life, however, this tension has disappeared, as we have gone different ways. She became a doctor, which pleased my father.

My sister Philippa was born when I was nearly five and better able to understand what was happening. I can remember looking forward to her arrival so that there would be three of us to play games. She was a very intense and perceptive child, and I always respected her judgment and opinions. My brother, Edward, was adopted much later, when I was fourteen, so he hardly entered my childhood at all. He was very different from the other three children, being completely non-academic and non-intellectual, which was probably good for us. He was a rather difficult child, but one couldn’t help liking him. He died in 2004 from a cause that was never properly determined; the most likely explanation is that he was poisoned by fumes from the glue he was using for renovations in his flat.

My earliest memory is of standing in the nursery of Byron House School in Highgate and crying my head off. All around me, children were playing with what seemed like wonderful toys, and I wanted to join in. But I was only two and a half, this was the first time I had been left with people I didn’t know, and I was scared. I think my parents were rather surprised at my reaction, because I was their first child and they had been following child development textbooks that said that children ought to be ready to start making social relationships at two. But they took me away after that awful morning and didn’t send me back to Byron House for another year and a half.

At that time, during and just after the war, Highgate was an area in which a number of scientific and academic people lived. (In another country they would have been called intellectuals, but the English have never admitted to having any intellectuals.) All these parents sent their children to Byron House School, which was a very progressive school for those times.

I remember complaining to my parents that the school wasn’t teaching me anything. The educators at Byron House didn’t believe in what was then the accepted way of drilling things into you. Instead, you were supposed to learn to read without realizing you were being taught. In the end, I did learn to read, but not until the fairly late age of eight. My sister Philippa was taught to read by more conventional methods and could read by the age of four. But then, she was definitely brighter than me.

We lived in a tall, narrow Victorian house, which my parents had bought very cheaply during the war, when everyone thought London was going to be bombed flat. In fact, a V-2 rocket landed a few houses away from ours. I was away with my mother and sister at the time, but my father was in the house. Fortunately, he was not hurt, and the house was not badly damaged. But for years there was a large bomb site down the road, on which I used to play with my friend Howard, who lived three doors the other way. Howard was a revelation to me because his parents weren’t intellectuals like the parents of all the other children I knew. He went to the council school, not Byron House, and he knew about football and boxing, sports that my parents wouldn’t have dreamed of following.

Another early memory was getting my first train set. Toys were not manufactured during the war, at least not for the home market. But I had a passionate interest in model trains. My father tried making me a wooden train, but that didn’t satisfy me, as I wanted something that moved on its own. So he got a secondhand clockwork train, repaired it with a soldering iron, and gave it to me for Christmas when I was nearly three. That train didn’t work very well. But my father went to America just after the war, and when he came back on the Queen Mary he brought my mother some nylons, which were not obtainable in Britain at that time. He brought my sister Mary a doll that closed its eyes when you laid it down. And he brought me an American train, complete with a cowcatcher and a figure-eight track. I can still remember my excitement as I opened the box.

Clockwork trains, which you had to wind up, were all very well, but what I really wanted were electric trains. I used to spend hours watching a model railway club layout in Crouch End, near Highgate. I dreamed about electric trains. Finally, when both my parents were away somewhere, I took the opportunity to draw out of the Post Office bank all of the very modest amount of money that people had given me on special occasions such as my christening. I used the money to buy an electric train set, but frustratingly enough, it didn’t work very well either. I should have taken the set back and demanded that the shop or manufacturer replace it, but in those days the attitude was that it was a privilege to buy something, and it was just your bad luck if it turned out to be faulty. So I paid for the electric motor of the engine to be serviced, but it never worked very well, even then.

Later on, in my teens, I built model airplanes and boats. I was never very good with my hands, but I did this with my school friend John McClenahan, who was much better and whose father had a workshop in their house. My aim was always to build working models that I could control. I didn’t care what they looked like. I think it was the same drive that led me to invent a series of very complicated games with another school friend, Roger Ferneyhough. There was a manufacturing game, complete with factories in which units of different colors were made, roads and railways on which they were carried, and a stock market. There was a war game, played on a board of four thousand squares, and even a feudal game, in which each player was a whole dynasty, with a family tree. I think these games, as well as the trains, boats, and airplanes, came from an urge to know how systems worked and how to control them. Since I began my PhD, this need has been met by my research into cosmology. If you understand how the universe operates, you control it, in a way.

A history brief, simple and sweet
By Ash Jogalekar
Stephen Hawking is not only a great scientist but he is also an exemplar of grit, optimism and good humor. He is as famous for his triumph over a devastating disease and his determined survival as he is for his scientific brilliance. His book "A Brief History of Time" introduced millions of people to the wonders of the universe. This short memoir now introduces people to his own life which has not been any less wondrous. Those who have read the biographies by John Gribbin and Michael White or by Jane Hawking may not find much that is new in here, but the book definitely benefits from Hawking's simple and illuminating writing style and dry sense of humor. Suffering from an illness like ALS can definitely lead someone to express themselves with economy and clarity.

As the title indicates, the book is very short (144 pages) and is divided into even shorter chapters. Each chapter is more like a snippet that focuses on one particular topic. The earlier chapters deal with Hawking's upbringing in London as the son of caring and slightly eccentric parents, his education at Oxford and Cambridge and his initial struggles with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Hawking gives us a good idea of the pioneering research on black holes and the Big Bang which he did with Roger Penrose and others. There are also anecdotes about other scientists like Richard Feynman and encounters with celebrities like Popes and Presidents. Hawking talks unflinchingly about his disease without a hint of self-pity, and this is a quality that continues to make him so widely admired, sometimes to the point of reverence.

The later chapters deal with his current research on quantum gravity, his various trips to different parts of the world (including a few weeks spent every year at Caltech) and his two divorces. One revealing part of the book is Hawking's description of the several occasions on which he was on the brink of death; it was only the dedication of his wives, Jane and Elaine, that saved his life. Old and new photographs (some showcasing Hawking's bawdy sense of humor) enliven the narrative. The book ends on a characteristically optimistic note. Hawking says that his devastating illness has not held him back from fully living life and he is grateful for his gifts and for the support others have given him. There's some useful advice there for all of us.

My Brief History by Stephen Hawking is a fascinating jubilee of life, love & triumph over adversity
By Shannon
Told with the greatest humility, My Brief History by Stephen Hawking is a fascinating jubilee of life, love and triumph over adversity that gives its readers unprecedented access to the heart and mind of one of the most famous and loved living scientists.

The following is an excerpt of my book review published in association with Nature.com and Scientific American. The full review can be read online at [...]

The autobiography revealed a great deal about Hawking, the man. Most notably, it took Hawking out of a wheelchair and showed us a vibrant, active, and youthful man. The featured image on the cover of the book, titled "The Boat Club at play," is of Hawking leaping into the air holding a white kerchief. Similarly, we see Hawking, once again defying gravity much later in life, in the last photo of the book where he is floating in "Zero-G" aboard NASA's "Vomit Comet."

Hawking's autobiography genuinely burst to life with 47 archival images, including candid family portraits with his parents and his two sisters, Philippa and Mary, affirming a happy childhood. (A photo of his adopted brother, Edward, is absent). Some of the photos exposed colorful, non-centrist, and controversial aspects of the lives and political beliefs of his parents, Frank and Isobel. The photos of Stephen's first wife, Jane, whom he married in 1965, and their children -- from eldest to youngest: Robert, Lucy, and Tim -- unveiled tender, celebratory moments depicting nearly 25 years of a happy marriage and a joyful home life. The photos, however, masked brewing marital tensions that followed a life-threatening event related to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, commonly known as "ALS" or "Lou Gehrig's disease." Hawking said his declining health led to his wife's affair. He laid bare the circumstances in more detail than expected on pages 84-88, explaining their eventual physical separation in 1990.

The narrative story revealed much about Hawking's early life and education. First, we learned that disability was not new to his family. His mother, who was Scottish and the daughter of a physician, had an older sister afflicted with Down's syndrome, a heritable disease. The experience probably imbued her with an understanding of the patience and dignity required in the process of care giving with the differently abled. While there are some instances in studies showing the heritability of ALS, the actual cause of the motor neural disease remains unknown. His father, who was academically and professionally trained in medicine, was aptly suited to raise a child who developed a medical condition. In short, Hawking could not have been born to a family that would be more capable to provide him with the love, empathy, dignity, and emotional support to pursue his dreams and become the scientist he is today.

As a fellow Cantabrigian, I found the chapters on Cambridge life to be quite relatable and I feel most alumni would enjoy reading the book for the same reason.

In addition to allowing the reader to learn about Hawking as a family man, the book conveyed some surprising stories about his professional studies and career as a cosmologist. Hawking also used his autobiography to correct some misconceptions. He revealed examples of how he felt certain incidences in his life, and his overall public image, had been distorted by the media.

The book no doubt serves as the basis of the recent movie, Hawking, released in the UK by Vertigo Films, September 2013.

A Very Brief History
By Rikki White
I was one of the millions who bought a copy of A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME and read it from cover to cover. It enthused me so much that I enrolled with The Open University and did three years study of AstroPhysics, so I am a hero worshipper of Stephen Hawking and anxious to learn as much as I can about this incredible man. Therefore, I am disappointed that I can only give two stars to this book. I have read several of his books and I was wanting to find out more about the man not his music. There is little new to enlighten the reader of his fortitude with the slings and arrows that life had shot at him. It was more a record of people and places he encountered. Wonderful that he could be so positive about the advantages his disability gave him but I feel I know no more about him than I did at the start of the book. The chapters on his work I found incomprehensible, but that's probably my fault not his. This is a book for admirers of the genius who have little knowledge of his history and want to know something about him. It could appeal to a wider audience than his more scientific offerings as only a small section needs a knowledge of theoretical physics to understand it. The title is apt, it is indeed a very brief history.

Seven Planes of Existence: The Philosophy Behind the ThetaHealing® Technique, by Vianna Stibal

First developed twenty years ago by Vianna Stibal, ThetaHealing is essentially applied quantum physics. Using a theta brain wave, which until now was believed to be accessible only in deep sleep or yogi-level meditation, the practitioner is able to connect with the energy of All That Is – the energy in everything – to witness healings of the physical body, and to identify and change limiting beliefs. This book is for those who have already started to experience the magic of this energy healing modality, and wish to deepen their understanding of the Seven Planes of Existence – the philosophy behind the creation of ThetaHealing.

Vianna presents exciting new information to help you take your skill with this work to the next level, and brings the reader into dimensions that she believes to be the beginnings of life itself, on a journey that leads outward, past the universe, to transform beliefs, showing that with a theta state of mind it is possible to connect to a Divine Energy before it becomes anything in this universe.

Review
"Efforts to help marriages in trouble are hard to fault, especially when presented with the good-hearted intentions of an expert like Gary Chapman. His audio is a wise man's overview of how to fix a broken marriage, especially when children are involved. Like his other relationship lessons, this one is grounded in the Christian faith, but it rises above the often trite and smug advice one hears from too many such authors. His voice and message are comforting as his rich baritone conveys his confidence in his ideas. This is a lesson that people of all levels of faith, stress, or disillusionment should hear."

Crosses the Line

Dr. Gary Chapman has extensive training in counseling and it shows throughout this book. Unlike many other Christian marriage books written by people with minimal training or experience, in this book Dr. Chapman draws upon his years of counseling experience to guide people experiencing the deep pain of marital separation. He makes many great points such as (page 63) “we must acknowledge our feelings but we do not serve them.”

He makes another really good point on pages 36-41: “After separation, an inferior feeling person will typically blame himself for the failure of the marriage, then he or she pleads with the spouse for a chance to start over. When that is spurned, he or she sinks into deep depression and entertains thoughts of suicide….One of the steps in turning your thinking around is to realize that God has not given up on you….In spite of all that has happened God still intends to bring you to wholeness…….Accept God’s forgiveness, forgive yourself and concentrate on the future…”

The best chapter in this book is Chapter 4---Developing Your Relationship with God. Here Dr. Chapman teaches on deepening our walk with God. We appreciated how he emphasized the importance of strengthening our faith during the darkest times of life. This chapter was a pleasant surprise which you don’t often see in marriage books.

The rest of this book emphasizes seeking ways to restore broken marriages. Over and over, Dr. Chapman emphasizes that the purpose of separation is reconciliation. (Page 93) “Your goal is reconciliation with your spouse. You want to keep all roads open in that direction.” But sometimes his advice sounds very cold. He writes on page 95, “You are separated but not divorced. Lonely and alone. Free to hurt but not to remarry……”

Then finally in the last chapter, Dr. Chapman recognizes that sometimes reconciliation is impossible. He writes on page 127, “God will not hold you responsible for the decision of your spouse. You are only responsible for your own attitudes and behavior. If reconciliation is not possible, do not think God’s purposes for you are over…..If your spouse will not return, God will still lead you from the valley of despair to the mountain of joy. God is not through with you.….in those hours when no one else can help, He will assure you of His presence.…”

That’s one of the best points in this book. But reading through the rest of the book leaves you wondering why Dr. Chapman keeps pressuring everyone to reconcile with their spouse when he knows that reconciliation will be clearly impossible in many situations. For example, on page 113, he again recognizes that “reconciliation is not always possible. Your best efforts may meet with coldness, hostility and eventual failure. Even God was not always able to be reconciled to His people.”

Then Dr. Chapman quotes Jeremiah 3:8 where even God Almighty experienced divorce. That’s a really powerful Scripture warning us that when even God Himself reached a point where the only option left was divorce----that can happen to us as well. Dr. Chapman continues, “God would not force Israel to return…..Many separated Christians have prayed and pleaded with God to ‘bring my spouse back.’ The spouse has not returned so the Christian becomes discouraged….God will not force your spouse to return.”

That is a really important point that has been lacking for several other popular Christian marriage books which we read. But the problem with this book is that even though Dr. Chapman recognizes the reality that you cannot force your spouse to return, he keeps pressuring people to wait endlessly, hoping and praying for reconciliation.

On page 67, he gives this advice to people who are separated: “Don’t set time limits for yourself or your spouse. When you set limits, you are trying to dominate the other person.”

How long is someone supposed to wait for their spouse to make a decision to return? Dr. Chapman just acknowledged that the other spouse may never return. Are you supposed to wait forever? This advice is missing the point that there are Biblical grounds for divorce which don’t require a trial separation or waiting period. That’s what Jesus said in Matthew 19:9 and the Apostle Paul confirmed in 1Corinthians 7:15 by saying “let them depart.”

But when Dr. Chapman addresses the issue of infidelity, he gives this advice (pages 27-28) “What if your spouse is having an affair and is now separated from you?....First realize that the third person is never the full reason for separation…..your failures and those of your spouse brought about the demise of your marriage. Unresolved conflict, unmet needs, and stubborn selfishness eat away at the relationship…..therefore each partner must work toward reconciliation.”

“Refuse to let the affair be the issue…..Your spouse may not break off the affair immediately but the more you can do to resolve conflicts and communicate hope, the more attractive reconciliation becomes. When you are lashing out in anger or failing apart in self pity you do not make reconciliation very desirable.”

That’s not what Jesus said! According to Jesus, if your spouse has an affair, you can choose to end the marriage and move on with your life. Not sit around, being held hostage until the other person makes the choice for you. Why is Dr. Chapman more concerned about the feelings of the cheating spouse than the victim?

In this book, Dr. Chapman doesn’t seem to recognize the deep pain caused by an affair when he writes that people need to just ignore the affair and “concentrate on restoring your own relationship…..Obviously you cannot be reconciled until your spouse breaks off the affair but DO NOT SET TIME LIMITS or demand any particular action!”

That’s a real problem when even God Himself sets limits with us. God said, “My spirit will not always strive with man.” (Genesis 6:3) We appreciated how Dr. Chapman mentions this on pages 82-83 when he writes, “Some Christians define love as totally placating the mate’s desires without regard to his or her behavior. This is something that God Himself does not do.…He has established boundaries….when we violate or rebel, God loves us too much to be silent.”

Since God sets boundaries with us, why can’t we also set boundaries in our personal lives? This book doesn’t seem to understand the concept of boundaries when it keeps pressuring people to wait year after year until their spouse makes the choice for them. However we appreciated that Dr. Chapman does recommend the book Boundaries for further reading----that book has a much better Scriptural study on how God expects us to set boundaries.

Speaking of which, we appreciated how Dr. Chapman included an entire chapter in this book on “tough love.” That advice is really needed. But then when he begins addresses separations caused by physical and sexual abuse, once again Dr. Chapman continues pressing for reconciliation instead of recognizing that sending an abused wife back to an abuser is unthinkable!

On page 80 he describes an emotionally distraught lady approaching him for advice on her marriage. She says, “My husband physically and emotionally abused me for eight years. He refused to work. I supported the family for seven years. Then I got sick. Even then he refused to get a job.”

Dr. Chapman advises her to separate from her husband and tell him that refusing to work is a sin (2Thess 3:10). That’s more than you’ll find in many popular Christian marriage books that tell wives to stay in bad situations. But the problem is that Dr. Chapman feels that her husband just needs some counseling from a pastor. Once he finds a job and attends some counseling sessions, then she should let him move back into the home if there’s “some evidence that things can be different.” Then Dr. Chapman tells her, “Your attitude is not to be one of abandonment but of love!”

How could Dr. Chapman send her right back to an abuser? Can a few counseling sessions really change the eight year pattern of abuse? Even Dr. Chapman acknowledges in his other book Desperate Marriages (page 98) that “my observation is that a highly controlling person who has dominated a spouse for many years does NOT change quickly.”

This book gets even worse on pages 83-84 when Dr. Chapman deals with the issue of “sexual abuse of children.” When spouses separate for that reason, he recommends “working closely with a pastor or Christian counselor” and not allowing the abuser to “visit the house” until “there has been considerable counseling and the counselor agrees that such a visit would be safe. A promise to change is not enough in these cases.”

But then once again he emphasizes “remember, our goal is reconciliation.” Reconciliation with a child molester? NO WAY! Jesus clearly said that it would be better for someone to have a millstone tied around them and thrown into the deepest sea than for them to hurt one of the littlest ones. (Matthew 18:6) And Jesus said that “when you did it to the least of them you did it to Me.” (Matthew 25:40)

How could Dr. Chapman even consider the thought of pressuring someone to reconcile with a child molester? If reconciliation is so important, why did Jesus say that “I didn’t come to bring peace but division.” (Matthew 10:34) Besides, we all know the verse where the Apostle Paul tells the Corinthian church to kick out the guy sleeping with his father's wife. Would the Apostle Paul have pressured a wife to reconcile with a child abuser?

Just when we want to give Dr. Chapman the benefit of the doubt, he repeats this horrific advice in his other book Difficult Marriages. There on pages 163-165 he gives a real life example of counseling a wife after she had discovered that her husband was molesting their daughters ages sixteen and eighteen. She wants to divorce the husband and protect her daughters by never seeing him again.

Dr. Chapman advises her to separate but not divorce. He tells her to move out of the house and ask her husband to seek counseling. Then after “six to nine months” of counseling for the husband “when the counselor assures you that he has thoroughly worked through this problem then the two of you can begin to go for marriage counseling” which Dr. Chapman expects will last another “six to nine months.”

Reading that left us shaking our heads in horror, unable to believe that a Christian leader like Dr. Chapman would actually keep a wife trapped in that kind of relationship.

Maybe Dr. Chapman said that because he believes that God hates divorce. That’s actually not in the Bible! What Malachi 2:16 (NIV) actually says is “The man who hates and divorces his wife,” says the Lord, the God of Israel, “does violence to the one he should protect.” And the Bible says that God HATES “a proud look, lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood….” (Proverbs 6:17) That’s the key elements in domestic violence.

Even Dr. Chapman begins to realize that so he concludes his discussion on child abuse by suggesting that (page 84) “getting back together without dealing with real problems is almost certain disaster.” But that advice is too little too late when he's spent the majority of the book pressuring wives to get back together.

The Bible clearly commands us “not to associate with anyone who claims to be a believer yet indulges in sexual sin, or is greedy, or worships idols, or is abusive or is a drunkard or cheats people. Don’t even eat with such people.” (1 Cor 5:11 NLT) Why does the church require wives not just to eat with these types of husbands, but also to live and sleep with them too?

Maybe that’s why Jesus warned us about how religious leaders will “reject God’s commands in order to keep their own tradition.” (Mark 7:9) What has gone wrong with Christian counseling that they would even consider pressuring a wife to reconcile with a child abuser? Even the most hardcore heathen counselor wouldn’t do that! This kind of thinking has no place in the body of Christ. That’s why we cannot recommend this book. Even though this book has some really good points, we cannot take the risk that it would lead to hurting one of the little ones. Remember what Jesus said about the millstone before you consider following this type of advice.

I am thankful that Dr. Chapman took the time and had the courage to write this meticulously thoughtful and respectful book of advice for people seeking to reconcile a wounded, difficult marriage. He has a gift for writing complex ideas in clear, simple language and adds a deft dash of humor to make the reader smile. Best of all, Dr. Chapman conveys caring through his tone and becomes as a friend helping one cope with the grief of marital separation. His writing is prayerful, based on Scripture, his experience as a marriage counselor, his own marriage, and holds a strictly cautious balanced view of the challenges of marital reconciliation. Of several books I read, this is the best and I would highly recommend giving this book to newlyweds so when they encounter their first difficulties, or little separations, Dr. Chapman's advice would encourage and guide them toward reconciliation. Dr. Chapman is a courageous, disciplined, gifted, spiritual thinker and writer of many books. Hope for the Separated has been very helpful to me.

pretty good book
By dewayne
I am currently separated from my wife and have been reviewing books to assist me in working through this transition (btw, highly recommend "Lost Love" from either gary chapman or Dr David Hawkins (cant remember which author). I wish there were more books that spoke directly to men where it wasnt assumed that they spent the marriage clueless, always working and ignoring their family, while the woman tirelessly raised the kids and finally gave up because the husband spent his free time golfing.

While I am sure this happens, for a lot of men, this is not the case. Either write generically OR list better new real world scenarios, where the husband is told "I dont love you" and the wife holes herself up and refuses to engage the family, get a job, work on the relationship, etc. and subsequent shenanigans (draining bank accounts, using children as weapons, etc.). The man adds to his current duties and becomes the single parent.

Speaking for myself and other men, I am tired of TV, books, other people, etc. assuming the man is a bumbling idiot that golfed his family away. This, I believe has fueled a number of women into believing that they have to get out of a "horrible" relationship.

That being said, I did like a number of the passages in the book (it has a Chritian view on marriage/separation/divorce) that I agree with (there is no reason for divorce), I especially liked an item on pg 90 that talked about tough love and the misconception of what that is. While the example roles were reversed (see why I am upset above), the wife put up with her husband (who refused to get a job or help ut around the house, etc. in addition to his other nacissistic behavior). The wife put up with the behavior for years. The husband kept taking advantage of the "new normal" and pushed the envelope on his bad bahavior. The wife got to her breaking point and cut him off with the understanding that she will not "take him back" until he straightened up.

This example helped me make certain financial decision with my wife to move towards 1 of 3 solutions:
1)reconciliation
2)divorce
3)becoming self sufficient (get a job) and live as roommates until #1 or #2 occur

Outsiders would say that I was being harsh, however, the author talks through how this is tough love with the ultimate goal of the spouses happiness. Obviously they are miserable, but stay for convenience until a later date. Eroding the family further because they refuse to make thing better.

It has a good amount of scripture in it and also views marriage as I do (no cause for divorce), but prepares you for that reality.

All in all a good book, but recommend the Lost Love book.
